I'm new (duh) to the Ville, a somewhat convert from a large CS community. Anywho, I've been having a small problem on Ville servers. Every single map change, I cannot join a team as soon as the map loads, I have to "retry" several times. Any thoughts?
Basically, I hit 1 or 2 or 5, and nothing happens for a bit, then it comes back to the same choose team screen, or sometimes I get to the class select screen. If I do pick a class, nothing happens, I get stuck in limbo, on a team, unable to spec or talk or join. When I reconnect and hit enter to clear the briefing, I'm assigned to a team (not sure why unless my team select command from earlier is buffered somehow?), and the whole process starts over. If I just sit and wait for 5 minutes at the start of the map, I can join fine.
I have noticed that my ping/choke/loss are huge at map load on ville server, and generally this problem arises in high lag situations.
Anything I can do to help this? Other than sit and wait till my connection stabilizes before joining?
Actually, I have the exact same problem. (Except I don't have the patience to wait five minutes to join and I don't think my lag is spiking... I have a cable modem.) My understanding is that this is a Valve problem with map switching and it drives me CRAZY! If you look at my stats you will see that I go Spectator more often than anything else. But I never spectate, it is just how many times this map switching bug gets me. It even happens to me on DOD. I think we just have to quit the server and rejoin, until Valve releases a bug fix. But if anyone knows that I'm wrong, please say so. I would be deeply indebted to anyone that could save me from this constant irritation of quitting and rejoining.

Argh... This bug suckz, I used to have it a long time ago and I spent many a hours talking to Valve about it in email, searching for fixes on forums everywhere on the net but I never found a permanent fix and Valve will just about deny the problem even exists. I don't have this problem anymore but when I did these 2 things helped a little.
in the console type this first:
retry
if that does not work after several times try this:
reconnect
When I finally got sick of doing those things I re-installed HL about a dozen times and still the f'n problem was there. When I did my yearly "Format harddrive, re-install operating system" I installed HL fresh and the problem went away (I know there is a big hint there)

Any of you Ville guys from Louisville? Just curious, I'm moving there in a few weeks once I get my masters, I think the million man lan is happening in Louisville sometime this summer.
Anywho, I'm too lazy to format and start over, so I guess I'll just deal with it. I've had the same problem on my CS communities servers, but it has something to do with some anti-stack code running there. I'll try the reconnect and escape/resume ideas, haven't tried either of those!
