I think they're one step away from being llamas. I have great respect for the snipers that actually get out there up close and get some kills. The ones who hide out are just stat whores. I make sure i specifically target the snipes that are cowering in spawn.. hit em with the nade and a nice fire rocket..

Not always, Svvord was a stat whore, but he still faught like a man when he was a sniper. He still does. And there are some great snipers around that know when to stay in respawn and snipe from there, or charge out, maybe get some kills, and maybe die. These snipers are the best, and Snipe Shocker is one of them. And Ktulu ( I've only seen him play sniper a few times, but he did the right thing every single time ).

So, in conclussion, not all snipers that hide in respawn are wimps. Only some.

chicken or not, isnt it stopping the enemy that matters? if they can do that, good for them, i dont care if they hide in back, snipers arent meant to be an offensive class.

Goldom is right, snipers are not an offensive class. They are not meant to fight one on one, they are supposed to hide where they cannot be spotted or killed. I hide and run, but my kills are just as high as those who are on the front lines. I don't know how many times I have run far enough for the enemy to quit chasing me then run around the corner and kill him. If I stay and fight there is a good chance im not going to win with my ar or nailgun. So I run until I am not chased anymore, then try to kill the chaser. Maybe the question should be why do people care how other people play the game? Im sorry I don't stand there helplessly and die. The sniper rifles have a scope for a reason.

I do think you have to consider the class. Now I know I have seen snipers on my team in Avanti below cap 2 when we are trying to take the church...what the hell is that!? But snipers should hang back. What good do they do your team if they are dead? There are classes that are meant to be on the front... HW. If you have an HW hanging back which I have seen, then you have a problem.

I do think there are certain times that snipers should move up, but I wouldn't want my team's snipers on the front, that is for sure.

I agree that snipers should stay far back, but it's ridiculous if a sniper is sitting back by repsawn when his team is going for cap 3.He is protecting himself but not his team, which as far as I know is very annoying to the team, especially if there is a defending sniper killing them. I'll help them out sometimes and will ignore the HW's, the soldiers, the demos and all the other classes and pick that sniper out. I'm not a sniper hunter and will normally stop selecting him as my first choice of kill if he moves up to at least the ladder by 2. I've actually had a HW shooting me and then stop once he saw that I was going for a respawn camping sniper. Basic point being, snipers don't need to be on the front lines but one that hides in respawn is just annoying.

As the river of comment winds its way thru the sniper class one thing becomes clear.
No matter who you are there is a line between playing the game as a team and playing as a solo operator. Better known as a chicken or stat head.

You know who fits in these catagories, lets beat them up! JK not

As a sniper, I take issue with many of the comments on this thread.

Snipers are, for the most part, defensive players. We are there to hold the nme at bay, not advance against them.

The one offensive scenario I can think of is on warpath, when there are sgs covering the tunnel into the nme base. Snipers can take them out rather than everyone sacrificing themselves until they can be overcome.

As for Avanti, there are certain places snipers can make a difference when advancing the flag.

Cap 1 & 2: By the right-hand gate, covering the high-ground that is cap 2. Can stop a lot of players coming in, before they can make a big difference.

Cap 3: Hallway behind cap 2, and/or doorway leading out of the area. The hallway is fairly safe, but only covers the tower and wall of the church. I prefer to cover the doorway as that is a choke-point, and the nme holds the high-ground right in front and rains down fire. I can help keep that area clear and the nme from stopping us getting out to attack 3.

Cap 4: This one's kinda tough, but the best is the walk up the right side of the church...and if you can make it to the top of the hill, the run to the respawn area.

But all-in-all, snipers are defensive, and like someone said earlier "We can't help if we are dead."

You may think I'm a stat-whore (they are pretty good, aren't they? ) On many maps my 40-50 kills is usually in the top 3 on my team. And while my team doesn't win all the time, I'll bet they win close to 75% of the time.

Just think about it...if I am playing defense, then that means that is 20-30 attempts at the flag/cap point, that didn't happen. And another 10-20 times that there wasn't an nme sniper aiming for your head as you were running across the map.

While I haven't seen everyone play, for the most part the snipers that I have seen hang way back have been fairly new players.

Just my biased two cents worth.

First off, thanks Omega, for the compliment.

Now, my $.02

I have said time and time again, that I am what I would consider myself an Offensive Sniper. I do die quite a bit (note my 1.3 K ratio ) But I HATE camping so far away from the action that I can only pick off the straglers that get by my teammates. I think my two favorite things to do is to take out nme snipes and kill SGs and the lowly Engineers that build them (no offense Mikey) In order to do this, I am often at the front lines with the rest of my team. As soon as I can get out of that damn death room and up the hill, the better.

Sometimes, I even round the corner of the left side of the church with my teammates on cap 4. I think one of my favorite spots (if I can keep it for any period of time) is the grassy area of the church yard, next to wall looking down the road. Its funny to frag some people in the back of the head as the run to the church

Now, I have nothing against other snipers that play at least NEAR the lines, but yes, if they are hanging back in SPAWN after the team caps 2, then they are total stat whores. The only stat I care about is kills, not Kills:Deaths. I know that I am not a capping kind of person, so I make sure to clear the cap for my teammates who ARE cappers. If I have to get on the front lines to do this, then dammit, I'll be on the front lines next to the Heavy Weapons guys! (or girls, Hoax)

hmm I'd comment but I think from the past however many posts... that people get the idea that snipers are meant to chill out in da back... there a few times I have found moving up to the front helps the rest of the team move foward though

Snipers should stay atleast one cap point behind everyone else. Who the hell can snipe when they are in the middle of the fray?
