Coming from somebody who has had both, seems to me that pentium runs a lot smoother and cooler than amd did for me. |

Pentiums are probably slightly better than AMD processors assuming you get the best available of each but the major hang-up I have about Intel is the price. The money you fork out for an Intel top of the line processor is not worth the slight edge you get processor speed. Traditionally AMD have been power hogs and have run very hot but with the introduction of the AMD Palomino series of processors the power requirements and heat output have both decreased somewhat. If you want the best machine available I would choose an Intel but only if money were no concern. I, as a college student, hada pretty tight budget when I recently built my newest machine and chose an AMD. Both my brothers purchased AMD's to build their machines as well. My step fatehr, who makes more than the three of us combined each year, bought an Intel.
Honestly if you were to sit in front of a machine to play games you probably won't notice a huge difference between processors... you will mostly notice it when you run benchmarking programs... we are talking about a few frames per second here or there and microsecond differences in a few other places... both will perform well beyond our actual ability to notice such things. |

Clock for clock AMD out performs Intel. However, AMD's top line processor is a little slower in clock speed to Intel. At current speeds, you can't tell much difference though. AMD is much better priced though.

For me $$$ was not an option. I make a pretty good living and wanted the best I could considering what little knowledge I have about these things. Tons of RAM, pentium 1.8, and cable. I love reading the technical stuff you guys come up with cause if anything it will prepare me for the next purchase when that time comes. Seeing as how I'm still way new to the forum atmosphere I think it would be great to see a topic on just this subject for if anything an education for those like myself who want to learn more. If anyone wants to PM me with information at any time I would appreciate it.

Well I haven't test drove teh new AMD since the K7 era, but I really don't like the P4. I have seen it on various PC brands and all are pretty much choppy and not very smooth. I currently use a P3 and the server I am building will be a dual P3 since it is hard to find a dual AMD MoBo. I built an AMD K7-800MHZ PC for my mother and it rocks. But I must say that Intel should of stuck with the P3. |
