This isn't really "frequently" asked, but hey, this is the closest I can get...
Anyway... how much bandwidth does it take to host a server well? Kbits/sec overall and per player? (either measure works)
Upload and download? Do they differ significantly on the server end? Does it scale up linearly, or something more annoying?
How much RAM and processing power for say... 24 players max?
I've heard warpath is the worst map for server strain, so maybe just what's required to run that...
Oh, and what is the air speed velocity of a fully laiden swallow?

An average 24 player server will take up around 600kps. The upload speed is the most important part though. TV 2 is the slowest of the servers (I think) It's a P3 667 with 256 RAM. Here is a link to a bandwidth spreadsheet.

Woohoo, thanks! That's some good info
Now I know how many bytes 24 players would take if they all played for exactly one century...

Of course, I'm sure everyone else would lag...but it sure you be cool.

I could host a 50 person server and not even use 1%. Cool.

A little less than a normal game.. but you can daisy chain HLTV.

OMFG, could you imagine the sheer chaos that would be? It'd have to be a HUGE map... badlands might be big enough... LOL
That reminds me of a multiplayer halflife game I got in once, it was a 32-player game of stalkyard... with TFC classes... You would literally spawn, shoot anything you had, be dead in 3 seconds, spawn, shoot anything you had, dead... (Imagine trying to rush the gates of dustbowl every 5 seconds)

I used to play on some 32 man CS servers, it was so much fun. We could send squads out to different parts of the map, and everyone stuck together on the CTs. It was great. The firefights were insane, sometimes everyone on the server jammed into the hallway in Dust, you could throw a grenade and take out 5 people with it.

The physical maxium of the tfc engine and c-strike engine is 32, so you cannot do that. I've seen 32 player c-strike server ran on a T1, and you could probably do the same in TFC.

Yeah, I used to play on some 32-player 2Fart servers... it was fun seeing 4 snipers jostling for the campgrounds (one EMP did wonders)

Hmm I never new that an OC3 was faster than a t3. Hell I always thought t3 was top of the line. I'd like to get one of those 0C192s tho, anyone know how much it would cost?
Anyone ever play a 64 player game of tribes 2? My base once had to go through a 22 person raid/raping from the nmes. It's just insane, tanks, bombers, dropships flying all over the place! |

Well, I found a list with the lowest price is $1,466,500
But, I think that's for the router needed to connect...
An OC3 (155Mbits/sec) is $49,000/month
There is no estimate for an OC192, but, doing the math:
OC192 (9.6 Gbits/sec) (9600/155= 61.9-some-odd OC3s) would translate to approximately $3,034,838.71/month
