Golden retriever IMO. I don't think there is a better dog for kids.

My wife says lab.
I grew up with Jack Russell terriers but they'd take your hand off if they don't like ya.
Personally I like Border Collies but you need a huge big field coz they like to ruuuuunnnnnn!
And greyhounds would be a no-no....

Nothing wrong with a Strontium Dog....They do tend to sleep on the sofa all day and monopolize the computer but at least they are housebroken (well mostly).
Oh, and rumor has it Strontium Dog likes heavy petting

He only likes it when its a blonde swedish slave girl feeding him grapes on his new deck.
Like Mal said Shitzus are great dogs for kids, and all depends, to me it does, whether your going to have a yard big enough for a large dog like a lab, or a boxer..they need room to run.

It really all depends on the type of living space you will be having in determing the size of dog but here is a short list of what several magazines consider the best type of dog to have with children. This list was composed by determining how friendly the dogs grown were to children, how social they were, and how well they protected their family
Lab
Golden Retriever
Standard Poodle (i have two of these wonderful animals and adore them...great dogs especially if your children are allergic to dog dander because poodles don't shed and are hypoallergetic. Oh these are the big poodles with the females at 65-70 and the males 75-80)
Boxer
Jack Russel Terrier
West Highland Terriers
Doberman Piencher (i know i killed that name but ya know what i mean)
German Shepherd
there are few more on the list i just can't remember what they are right now, but what was not on the list but i have heard so many positive things is a greyhound. You can rescue one and wont have to worry about house breaking him and from what i hear the rescued ones (ive seen this first hand as well) from the minute they see you will love you to death for saving their life. Finding a puppy greyhound though is tricky and if you are interested in that route i have collected several sites that whelp puppies because i am getting one within the next year, but to just tell ya how hard it is in 2004 only 200 greyhound puppies where whelped...

Nice dogs, greyhounds! You're right Powder...friendly and loveable but they need space! I grew up with two! My dad likes to hunt. He always had two working dogs...a Jack Russell to flush out rabbits/badgers/foxes and a greyhound to chase the quarry down. To watch a greyhound in full run mode is awesome (and scary when they're chasing you for fun!)
A good family dog, might be a pitbull or a doberman.......... if you hate the wife and want rid of the kids.....

Yea the only draw back to a doberman is that a lot of people are scared of them. I think they are precious and never had a problem with them...and from all that i have read very very very good with family and kids. Pitbulls on the other hand have such a bad rap...i am sure we all have horror stories or heard them but once again that is a dog i have never had problems with....but if you are interested in a pitbull there are a lot of things to look into especially state or city codes permitting that type of animal.
