|
|
This is all in fun...
1983 - Cubs manager Lee Elia goes on a tirade about Cub fans after a tough loss. Thrown in with at least 100 cuss words in five minutes was the famous quote "90% of people work and the rest come to the Cubs game." Elia was fired later that year.
1984 - The Cubs win the NL East and smoke the Padres in games 1 and 2 of the NLCS. Bob Dernier, Gary Matthews, and SP Rick Sutcliffe all hit HR's off of San Diego's Eric Show to win game 1 13-0. The Cubs won game 2 behind Steve Trout 4-2. The Cubs lose game 3, The Cubs lost game 4 on Steve Garvey's 3 run walk off HR, and Leon Durham does Bill Buckner before Bill Buckner did Buckner in game 5. Padres win and go to the World Series.
1985 - In true Chicago fashion. The after playoffs jinxtm hits. All five Cub starters spend time on the DL. The leader of the staff was Dennis Eckersley who they let get away to Oakland and become a dominate closer for the championship A's teams.
1986 - Jim Frey gets fired...and so does John Vuckovich...Gene Michael in. Cubs finish around 70-90.
1987 - Gene Michael fired...Andre Dawson is the NL MVP...for a last place team.
1988 - The Cubs have a losing year but bring up Greg Maddux...yes the Greg Maddux who got away to Atlanta.
1989 - Jerome Walton had a rookie record 30 game hit streak. The Cubs also won a game after trailing Houston 9-1...Cubs won 10-9 on Dwight Smith's hit. The Cubs win the NL East and play San Francisco in the NLCS. Two words:Will Clark. Cubs lose in five games.
1990 - The after playoffs jinxtm hits again. Cubs finish with a losing record
1991 - The Cubs may have had the worst manager in the history of baseball for part of a season. Jim Essian would clap after a bad Cub play. He would say each day after a 10-2 loss. "Tomorrow we will play a major league game." Essian never managed in the majors again.
1992 - Greg Maddux wins the first of his four consecutive Cy Young Awards. The problem is that the next three were with Atlanta because the Cubs pulled a 5 year / 25 mil contract off the table. Maddux goes on to become a Hall of Fame pitcher and a World Series winner in Atlanta.
1993 - The Cubs have a 84-78 winning record after having a torrid September to end the season. *In only logic that would happen with Cubs management. The Cubs fired manager Jim Lefevbre after guiding the Cubs to the winning record.
1994 - The Cubs hired former Milwaukee Brewer manager Tom Treblehorn feeling that his winning record in Milwaukee (yes, they used to win) would translate to Chicago. It translated to an 0-14 start and an impromptu meeting at a Chicago firehouse with fans across the street from the park. This resulted in fans throwing food at "Treb." Treblehorn who was fired at the end of the year. Thank God for Cubs that the strike happened...problem was the White Sox were the favorites in the AL to win it all.
1995 - Nothing noteable here
1996 - Another quiet year, Sammy (or Sam-ME if you think he's an egomaniac who plays for himself) establishes himself as a star.
1997 - Cubs lose a lot
1998 - The Cubs win the Wild Card as Sammy Sosa hits 66HR's. Cubs legend announcer Harry Carry passed away. The scene with the Cubs playoff play-in game with San Francisco was electric. Greg Maddux and Atlanta swept the Cubs in the playoffs. Honestly the Braves were getting total BS strikes called in their favor. Tom Glavine was getting strikes called from him that were 6 inches outside.
Cubs radio announcers Pat Hughes and especially Ran Santo may have had the funniest call ever of a bad play. The Cubs lead the NY Mets and San Fran by one game for the wild card with 4 games to go. The Cubs were leading 2-0 in the bottom of the 9th against Milwaukee. Closer Rod Beck was on his way to a 50 save season. Cubs LF (defensive replacement) Brant Brown dropped a routing flyball allowing 3 runs to score leading to a Milwaukee win.
Pat Hughes: Easy fly to Brown this oughta do it
Ron Santo: NOOOOOOOO!
Hughes: Brown dropped it
Santo: HE DROPPED THE BALL...NOOOOO
Hughes: Three runs score and Milwaukee wins 3-2
Santo: I'm sick
You can hear Santo for the next minute or so not being able to construct a sentence.
1999 - In tradition, The after playoffs jinxtm hits again. The Cubs were 10 games over .500, leading the Wild Card, and only 2 games out of the division lead. The Cubs lost 2 or 3 in Arizona. Then every White Sox fans' delight happened. The Sox swept the series at Wrigley Field sending them into a seasonlong tailspin. The Cubs hit June Swoontm. Cubs go from 33-24 (or so) to finish with a losing record with 95 losses. Jim Riggleman ('Rigs") gets fired.
2000 - A big hire brings Don Baylor to town. The Cubs promptly lose 95+ games.
2001 - The Cubs lead the division on Memorial Day. The Cubs hit June Swoontm. They win 88 games, but St. Louis and Houston each win 92 to make the playoffs.
2002 - Baylor gets fired, Rene Lachman gets fired, and Bruce Kimm gets fired prior to the last day of the season. Cubs...bad season.
2003 - A big hire brings NL Pennant winning manager Dusty Baker to town. The Cubs lead the divison on Memorial Day. June Swoontm is around the corner.
...to be continued.
Friends don't let friends children become Cub fans. Why torture them with failure?

The Sox in the last 20 years...underachievers, a cheap owner, and Terry Bevington. Bevington made a pitching change when no one was warming up in the bullpen. He was also argued a fair/foul call in favor of the other team. Let's not mention the ballpark with the backdrop of the projects.
Haven't won a home playoff game since 1959. Choked in 1983, 1993, and 2000.
The Cub one is more entertaining though. _________________ Yes, I'm still around

...continued
Cub superstar OF Sammy Sosa hit a groundball to score the first Cub run of tonight's game. Problem was that the bat was corked. The runner was sent back to 3rd base. Sosa was ejected out of the game and faces a fine and suspension.

Corked? |
Read the article that Darkath provided. It gives a pretty good explaination of what that does and what actually happened during the game. BG Sammy _________________

On purpose or not, he is responsible for the bat he uses. He'll get a nice 5 game suspension which will make him cold yet again. You'll get to see more 3 and 4 K outings for Sam-me. He is teh guilty!
Don't worry June Swoon tm is here and you Cub fans will see the fading pennant dreams wash away. See Chicago fans know their team won't win. So it's more fun seeing the other team lose and rag on their fans about it. _________________ Yes, I'm still around

The bat had a giant C on the end of it. Maybe sammy's story is true. |

The media is saying that the "C" might have been a label for being Corked. Even in spanish it begins with C (Corcho). Im not sure of the spelling. They took all his bats for inspection. So.. they may find that this was the only bat tampered with. The Cubs or Sosa said nothing about this "C" on top of his bat.
Sosa said in the post game interview:
I use that bat for batting practice,'' Sosa said. "It's something that I take the blame for. It's a mistake, I know that. I feel sorry. I just apologize to everybody that are embarrassed.''
He said during the interview that he accidentally grabbed the wrong bat.
The thing that is bothering me is all the people saying what about all these home runs? Or... this tarnishes his accomplishments, etc. Yes it does tarnish his image. Makes him look terrible. But what he has done up to this point? No, it doesn't. He still would have hit just as many home runs, he still would have just as many rbi's and he average would be the same.
In case some are wondering...
A corked bat does not make the ball travel farther off the bat. Its an myth. It doesnt work at all. The only thing it can do is maybe increase bat speed but the mass isnt the same so it actually doesn't have any benifit at all for distance or power. If you take out the bat mass and replace it with cork it generates less energy to the ball. If someone wants to hit a ball farther they need to use a bat with more mass.. a heavier bat. They been interviewing Physicists on the radio stations here and they all are saying the above. One guy was laughing at how the media is spinning it.
Also.. here is some good reading
http://www.bostonbaseball.com/whitesox/baseball_extras/physics.html
Accident or not it was a terrible thing that can happen. That type of bat is illegal and he has to pay the price for using it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Sosa, He was very foolish to use this bat. No matter what he says about it being a mistake, it happened and it shouldn't have. It's dissappointing as a fan. _________________
