Heres an interesting read if your building a new PC.
http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/products/tech/AN506_1GB_vs_2GB.pdf
Of course Corsair would want you to purchase 2GB of ram, but IMHO 2GB may be overkill for many things. In about a year I suspect 2GB will become the standard for many people but weigh the costs when purchasing or building a new PC. The extra money you put into that extra GB of ram might be able to be better used to get you a better video card or some other upgrade you really need.
Start at 1GB, and consider the upgrade in the future.

Hey, JD. I just built this rig and got it going this week.
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
AMD 64 3500+
2 1g sticks of Kingston
Nvidia 7800GT-SLI OC 256m
250G WD
Logitech laser mouse & KB
Lightscribe 2-layer DVD-RW (cool ability to laser the lable to the disks!)
As to the 2gig of memory, my main purpose was to get the full
capabiblity of the DDR, as it does make a diff, rather than 1 stick.
The price has dropped somewhat (82 a stick on EGG)
I did run 2 sticks of 512 DDR, but the 2 1gig sticks really start shining
when a memory-intensive pgm has been running for a while. It's
almost like running the old-fashioned memory drive. Popping in between pgms is a snap, esp when 5-6 pgms running all at once. I do a little multimedia video work in my spare time. I concure that 1 meg should suffice for gaming, but I would suggest running minimal services in the background.
Millertime..

you didn't buy 2 1gig sticks seperately did you?If you did, then they won't be able to dual channel because most of the time you have to buy a pack of ram branded as dual channel in order for it to work. _________________ R.I.P. Blue |

Heya!!!
1Gb is plenty enough for most game!!! The gain in FPS passing from 1gb to 2gb is minimal and I dont think it worth the price of the extra 1gb!!! 2gb is only necessary for really heavy application and/or heavy multitasking!!
Good review on the subject on tom's hardware website!!!
http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/13/how_much_ram_do_you_really_need/index.html
So I think i'll will believe an independant reviewer instead of a review coming from a memory stick seller!!! Dunno why!!! _________________ S Q U I D L Y

Piggy back question....I want to upgrade my companys laptop weak 128mb memory.
Some of the sites are asking what cpu, Pentium or celeron but the laptop only shows;
x86 family 6 model 8 strepping 10 for a cpu.
what the heck is that? _________________ Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. |

Try running this, it should tell you if its P3, P4 or Celeron

Because your running such a low end setup you probably would see a pretty decent increase in performance, but if you had the choice of adding RAM or upgrading processors, I would upgrade the CPU first. _________________ Killing is my bidness ladies and BIDNESS IS GOOD!!!! |
