If you ever get the chance to upgrade, I highly recommend an AMD Dual Core processor. They may be a bit pricey, but they realy are the best on the market at the moment, and the amount of data they can chew through is simply astounding.
In summation: go AMD!

Hmmm....Might have to consider taking out a 2nd on the old homestead for that upgrade.
Is it just a general performance improvement or is the gaming that much better? _________________ Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell.

26 Frames per Second upgrade on Half Life 2: Lost Coast. That should tell you enough. General system performance I have seen rise by over 160% (I upgraded from an Athlon 64 3700+).
And you can choose which core you want to run which program, meaning you can have all the stupid crap background processes run by one core, and have the whole other core run the game you are playing, or you can just let it decide how it wants to run stuff itself (and it does a great job of that too).
It's really just insanely awesome.
