I was thinking about buying some sort of home audio equipment for my room and I was looking at paying no more than $400 for it. Buying a theater system has been on my mind, but they can be a bit pricey for a good system. Also it does not have to be a surround sound home theater system, a shelf system would suit me also. Being able to play mp3 cd's is a must because I have many burnt cd's (don't tell the cops ). Any ideas and/or suggestions? Thanks for the help! |

since it doesnt sound like you're looking to buy anything custom or really big...id just go to your local electronics store and ask an audio specialist for some systems he recommends. Not sure if you have one near you, but I was just at Best Buy and all thier Home Audio is currently on sale.

I got the above system a few months ago as a "starter" system and so far its been pretty good. part of the reason was b/c I was also looking for a DVD player and got the one they mention with this system...but it was really b/c it was only $300.
gl and enjoy! _________________

for 400$ you can do quite a bit actually.... and it will really only depend on what you are looking to do... when i initially got my set up it was loud as hell... traditional fratboy setup:
two floorstanding speakers - each 4way with a 15" woofer
generic sony home theater receiver that fed 100w to each channel...
cost me ~350$ (150 for the receiver and 100 for each speaker)
if you want a surroundsound setup, again go with a home theater receiver then buy a small surround sound speaker kit... just make sure that the speaker wattage per speaker is greater than your wattage per channel... for example, my receiver puts out 100w per channel... i wouldnt use 60w speakers, i'd break them... but all my speakers now are 100w or more... also if you go with a surround sound system, pick up a downfiring sub and a center channel... in that order because your surroundsound speakers are dinky, the sub makes up for that =)
like someone else said, pop into your local best buy, circuit city, hh gregg, etc... and get their recommendations... or ask us for advice, either way, always ask if you dont know when it comes to this stuff... the worst would be to by all this great stuff and not know what to do or how to set it up and worst of all would be to blow a speaker...
edit: also with the home theater receivers that gives you lots of options... i have my computer plugged in for music in my living room, i have my ps2 hooked up on optical sound, dvd player on optical sound, my tv audio feeds in and if i want i can hook up my video from my computer video card to my receiver (then out to my tv) and still room for other stuff... hooking up the computer is just a matter of going to walmart (or whatever) and picking up a cable that runs from a standard headphone port (what is that like 1.25" or so?) that splits into a left and right channel.. then if need be some extensions, and then i just connect to my CD audio in on the back of my receiver... BAM! loud music in my living room via computer =) _________________
