On the ville IV server there seems to be an abundant of lag recently and the choke is unreal at times. Is this going to be fixed? It ran perfect before the source servers lol. Anyone else noticing the terrible lag on the server and rendering it very unplayable at times?

What time?

If its during the hours of 7am and 6pm central time you will see this at times. That T1 also runs a business. It will be better soon during normal business hours.

Yeah it's afternoon mostly, into the evenings it can be noticed real bad. Was having a choke of 15 just a bit ago. It will straighten out in time, thought it was me until people in game have said they are having bad lag as well.

Thanks for the fast reply, SilverOne.

I rebooted the server to make sure. Sometimes it needs it.

Choke shouldn't cause any problems. Its loss you need to worry about.

this is a myth other peoples high pings affect nobody but themselves and possibly you trying to shoot someone lagging. it in no way interferes with how your computer communicates with the servers.

can i please get some backup on this one because it is really annoying to hear people say this constantly.

I"ll back up replica on this. (mostly cuz i want to be on his good side, and get in his pantaloons) But really, joining a high pinging server is oftentimes just the fault of the server itself, not of the people on it.

Well maybe the server is the one causing the problem, and the high pings of the players is a result of the server. The other players' ping should have no effect on you unless the server is misconfigured, which I'm pretty sure isn't the case here. Like Silver said, the server might lag at certain times because a company uses the same resources, there isn't much that can be done about that. Just be thankful there still is a Ville DoD 1.3 server.

Ok here we go

cl_uodaterate

First of all you need to get your rates to match the server. Lets start out with cl_updaterate. All server have a max_cl_updaterate so you cannot exceed the server setting. So if the server is capped at 9999 thats all you get per client. So setting it at 20000 is just a waste as all the server allows is 9999.

cl_cmdrate

This command is how many packets you can recieve. The best way to set this is by starting at 20 and working your way up by multiples of 2 untill you find your happy spot. Having it to high will create choke/loss. Having it to low will cause choke/loss. All server will vary with the setting that works best for you.

I recommend doing this on each server you play on and writing them down so you can change them accordingly.

I do believe both TV4 and TV5 have capped max_updaterate of 9999. So start by setting your cl_updaterate to 9999. Also remember if you are running cable your connection changes constantly as poeple start using it as everyone that is in your block is on the same line. The more that are using it at the time the more your connection drops basically. So you might need to have a couple settings depending on the times you play.

Hope this helps out, because high pingers are not causing the issue's on the server. It's a urban legend so to say. .

cl_updaterate
This is the download rate from the server to your computer. Max is 101. This setting is what controls loss, so decrease this if you have a lot of loss.

Suggested:
Modem = 15-25
Broadband = 25-40

cl_cmdrate
This is the upload rate from your computer to the server. Max is 101. This setting is what controls choke, so decrease this if you have a lot of choke.

Suggested:
Modem = 25-35
Broadband = 40-50

rate
This sets the data transfer rate between your computer and the server. Max is 20000. If you have both choke and packet loss, you should try decreasing this. It is a good idea to set this to match the server's cap. You can use a program like HLSS to figure that out, unless someone here knows.

Suggested rates for different connections:
28.8k = 1500-2200
33.6k = 2000-3500
56k = 3500-4000
ISDN = 4000-6000
xDSL, Cable, T1, etc = 6000-9999

You'll want these setting to be as high as possible without getting loss or choke or exceeding your connection.

If you need to see your connection stats in game, use this command: net_graph 3

I hope that helps some of you.
