Here's a fun little game we call "who said that?" Try to identify the following quotes and their respective authors. You may be surprized at the result.
1.) "Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged."
2.) "I bring not peace, but the sword."
3.) "Educate your children to self-control, to the habit of holding passion and prejudice and evil tendencies subject to an upright and reasoning will, and you have done much to abolish misery from their future and crimes from society."
4.) "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus."
5.) "As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice."
6.) "I wish to confess with this work my faith before God and the whole world, point by point. I am doing this, lest certain people cite me or my writings, while I am alive or after I am dead, to support their errors, as those fanatics, the Sacramentarians and the Anabaptists, have begun to do."
7.) "Science without religion is lame..."
Before you look at the answers to who said these famous quotes, think about who might have said them, what sort of person would say such a thing.
Ready? Here are their respective authors.
1.) Abraham Lincoln
2.) Jesus Christ
3.) Benjamin Franklin
4.) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
5.) Adolf Hitler
6.) Martin Luther
7.) Albert Einstien
Are you shocked? You should be. In this day and age it is easy to misquote people, or "half quote" people and make them look as if they are supporting your side of the issue. The world is also full of misconceptions about what people are really like.
How could Abraham Lincoln be that totalitarian? He was more so than you think, but he had a reason: he had to preserve this nation in which we live. While he hated doing it, and it drove him into depression having to condemn so many people to death, he did it because he had to.
How could Jesus Christ say this? I thought he was a pacifist. The reality was he wasn't cruel, and he was a pacifist, but he said this not because he condoned violence, he said this because he realized that his teachings would bring war and strife upon humanity. In the following sentences after His quote, he said that man should still hold his faith in Him above all else. That was his true message. If one is to fully appreciate wisdom, one must view it in it's entirity, not view a short snippet of it.
I knew Benjamin Franklin was a good guy, so why include this quote? The answer is he wasn't a good guy morally, he was horribly immoral, he hung out with hookers, drank in excess, and was habitually lazy. But, even in his vice, he still had many words of wisdom which must not be ignored. His wisdom helped found democracy as a viable government in the world. Hypocrisy is no reason to ignore wisdom when you see it.
How on earth could Dr. Martin Luther King jr. have said something which supports forcing an idea upon somebody? I thought he represented freedom of thought? MLK, much like Abraham Lincoln, wanted to achieve a goal which he saw as very important to the survival of the nation, and had the conviction to achieve this goal. In this likeness, he wanted to make sure that his followers understood what must be done in order to achieve the goal of equality. Once again, the hypocrisy of the author is no reason to ignore wisdom.
This is just wrong, I thought Hitler was more akin to the anti-Christ than a Christian. This can't be a quote of his! The purpose of this quote was to address the problem of the public misquoting of people, which this entire letter is about. It is easy to make anything seem totally different from what it actually is, just by misquoting or taking it out of context. Another quote of Hitler's is the following, "Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way round, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise." If anything, the wisdom that can be gained from Hitler is that one must always be on the look out for more clever liars.
What does Martin Luther's quote mean? This serves the same purpose as Hitler's quote, except that it is more direct. Martin Luther knew that if you misquote and lie, you lead yourself down the path of sin and evil. He warns against this openly. Hitler knew this too, but instead he used this wisdom for evil intents rather than good, and thus we now know what the rammifications of not heeding this advice can lead to.
I thought Einstien was an atheist, like all scientists. What's up with this one? This quote exemplifies the deceptive power of believing everything you hear. Einstein was infact a Jew, and was even moderately pious. Infact many scientists were devoutly religious, such as Charles Darwin in his early years, Isaac Newton, and Max Plank. It is often today a misconception due to popular perception of science as atheism, and that science and religion are polar opposites. The answer is that they arent. Einstien's full quote was "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." He of all knew that one must council both in order to achieve a true understanding.
If any information and understanding is to be gained from this, please make sure that you have a thorough understanding of each of these people and what they said before you attempt to contemplate it.
Finally I leave you with one last quote:
"Our most powerfull weapon is knowledge, our most dire weakness is its' perversion."
-KK
P.S. Don't make this into a political or religious debate, it was not my intention. Instead, post other quotes you find interesting or contradictory, and tell us what wisdom can be gained from them. _________________

My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--
It gives a lovely light!
Edna St. Vincent Millay, "First Fig" (1920)
I have always felt that wisdom is a matter of perspective. So sit down and look around. I hope you enjoy the light. _________________

Nice post KopiKat
I like this one, They keep my feet on the ground.
Sixty years ago I knew everything. Now I know nothing. Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.”
- Will Durant
I like this one, It keeps the worlds feet on the ground
“We live on an island surrounded by a sea of ignorance. As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shores of our ignorance.”
- John A. Wheeler
I like this one, It shows you should be careful in what you desire
“There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer. When asked to define "great," he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!”
- That man now works for Microsoft, writing error messages
I like this one, told to me by a very nice and honarble man that I remember fondly and miss.
Treat every work day as your first work day and you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams

I think this quote pretty well illustrates the philosophy of a spammer. _________________
