What your Mom will do with her comp...
Is it for surfing on the net? send e-mail??? If so, you don't need a bigger and faster comp, 1.5 Ghz its plenty enough!!! In fact, it is almost too much!
Newest comp (faster) are built for people that play game or for people doing computer animation... For a day to day use, you REALLY don't need those "big beast"! Take it for what it worth, maybe your mother really need a fast comp but in this case, I cannot help you bcause just like you; "i'm not really home in that area". _________________ S Q U I D L Y

Go to Notebooks - Windows and they have prices on just about any laptop made. Quite a few under a $1000. _________________

Please remember that Cobra is in Belguim so his options will be different that here in North America.
With that thought in mind either a local shop/chain would be good or I would also recommend a Dell.
Try to consider the following:
What does she want to use it for? (chances are its not gaming so high end CPUs, lots of ram, and kick ass built in video cards wont be required)
What is important to her: Is it size and weight, battery life, screen size, DVD watchinb/burning, reliabilty, support and warranty, low cost, etc.
You need to sit down with her and think about some of the above items and then try to find something that gives her all she needs at a reasonable price.
I personally always recommend Dells, I have owned several of their desktops and laptops and of course work on hundreds of them at work as well as their servers, notebooks and various other bits. IMHO their track record is very very good and we seldom have one that has issues. Those people that bitch about Dell are usually bitching about self inflicted software problems that are not Dells problem. Heck, if your machine is full of viruses and spyware, explain to me how thats the fault of Dell?
Anyhow Cobra, if you want to talk more about things send me a PM.

the one thing i don't like about them is that they sold thier soul to intel.
my bro just got one of thier laptops for college and for gaming. the cover/screen part was put on wrong but he got that fixed. _________________ R.I.P. Blue |

the problem is: women are stubborn, she has a hp laptop right now with an amd 2000+
i explained her a thousand times that all it needs is a reinstall and more ram.
but nooooooooo...... she want's a new one. and a quicker one..........
so all i can really do is try to find something heavier under 1000$......
we need another laptop anyway, the one she has no goes to my brother. he's the only one at home that doesn't have his own pc for the moment.
i'll just try and find something. wish me luck. _________________ PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF =US-V= & VILLE $UPPORTER |

Dells are reliable and well supported...
They are a bit on the pricy side in my opinion...
and they use non-standard components.
We have had two Dells at our church that have had PSU failures, not dramatic but a hassle--and come to find out, no other Power supply except one from Dell will mount in the case. (We had a large selection of PSU's available to try through the college where I work.) Also found out that the mainboard has a non-standard mount configuration and will not mount in a standard ATX case--only a Dell case.
I don't know if Dell still operates that way, but the two computers I am referring to are both less than 3 yrs old. Dells are great for business and what I call non-power-users. I have ordered them for our church; however, I would personally not own a Dell desktop, nor probably laptop.
Now, with laptops...nothing is really standard. I would just make sure certain features are easily upgradeable--like memory and HD and then select the other features--HD, DVD/CD, video, LCD screen size, etc.--the way JD recommended--for intended use. _________________
