Headsets

Need some advice.

I am about to replace my headset. I am either going with a really good head set or 7.1 surround speakers that piss of the wife. I need advice on both. Headset cost is about everything, for surround the same since tax refunds are nice.

I have the surround sound ones... but the ones below are 30 bucks cheaper, same thing, just no surround sound. I like the surround sound in game and while watching movies... when I remember to turn it on. requires a aaa battery

If you're looking for a 7.1 speaker setup, I'm guessing your sound card is a recent Audigy or... (who is it... mWave??) anyways, it's some quality PCI card and not on-board. If that is the case I would recommend you avoid USB headsets. If you WERE going to be using motherboard-onboard audio or USB, then I would recommend you consider the Plantronic DSP-500 (link) as it is purportedly pretty good.

Otherwise... sorry, I'm not a sound fanatic. I can point you at some links, like this one, where people who know things and have money have reviewed speakers, but I am not so fortunate.

I would maybe like to tack onto this thread that if people can talk about what they use, whether they would recommend it or not, I'm curious to find out what everyone out there has.

I use ~2-3 year old Logitech 4.1 speakers, but not for gaming, and in my dorm room currently I have only 2.1 plugged in. For gaming I used Koss headphones for years, until they died by being thrown against the wall in frustration. Now I have some equally cheap but non-name-brand Wal*Mart replacements that SUCK. They're "Virtual Reality Surround Labs" and the audio just sounds... muddy to me, especially in games. For a mic I use the Zalmann clip-on, it worked pretty well for a while but lately has been too faint... don't know if it's my Windows re-install that screwed it up, or the fact that it was clipped to the Koss when the wall killed them.

This has usb adaptors but can plug in via mini jacks.....if someone made a digital audio SPDIF (optical or electrical) connection with a amp then i would be happy. The issue is that i have hearing loss in both ears, so it take me a lot to ehar without a amp boosing it even on head set.
