Has anyone here used verizons wireless broadband access?

i'm thinking about getting it (not for my main connection, just for when away from home, and i plan on doing a good amount of travelling soon for work). i was wondering how you like it, how the speed is, any connection issues?
If you havent used it what do you think about it from the website. It looks like a great service. a bit pricey, but i dont mind that too much. |

Looks like s decnet deal. Do you get coverage outside the listed areas? Here in Vegas, so many people don't secure their wireless setups and you could pull into almost any parking lot of a business center and get access through your laptop. Does look good though, especially for people always on teh go.

You will see ISDN like speeds for sure. Sometimes if you are in the heart of an metropolitian area you may see faster speeds. Not all of Verizon's network is EV-DO capable. But they are pushing forward even faster to get better saturation. Speed does vary. Some of the radios up on the towers are getting to oversubscribed meaning you may only get 56k if that during peak. On a side note the Cingular/AT&T EDGE service is very good as well.
I'll have to look for it, but there are companies that manufacture Routers and external antennas for EV-DO Networks. Using the external antennas some people claim to get a good signal 4 miles away. |

You can if you buy the card that has a plug in for an external high gain antenna, but other wise you have to be within the service area. |

You can if you buy the card that has a plug in for an external high gain antenna, but other wise you have to be within the service area. |
i was going to get the one that can use an external antenna. i saw a good one that some users said it got about 5 miles outside of normal area
and i just want to be able to have reliable internet on the go, dont want to worry about hoping to find unsecured router.
with my new job i will very likely be traveling to baltimore, and they have the EVDO service there.... so it looks promising. |

The service will do what you want, plus you don't have to worry about finding a hotspot. |

oh i know it will, i was just curious if anyone has actually used it.
and i read that antenna spec wrong. it was 50 miles under optimal conditions that it can increase range. |

Yeah and how big was the amp and the grid antenna! As somebody who is about to start a Wireless Broadband Service, 50 miles for this type of equipment is absurd! You have to pipe out alot of power to do that on fairly expensive gear and a really big grid antenna. At that point there is so much noise that the link is useless. Its possible IF they used Point to Point equipment that was engineered for long links and a 4-5' grid, but not with a PCMCIA card with a directional antenna that maybe doing 7-8dbm. 50 miles is just not possible. At most with clear line of sight and not to much RF noise/interference then I would say maybe 10miles while maintaining high speeds.

Here is a link to the site that I was talking about earlier. There is an amp on the site that would allow you to get 40 miles. I wonder if it is legal, they are usually not. Most likely you are going to screw up any EVDO system if you run that thing to close. Not including the noise level that will reduce your bandwidth.

Anyways as I said for what you want this will work great. If I could stomach the $80/month I would go for it, too. I have a client(doctor office) that the Docter, Nurse Practicioner and Office Manager use this in their laptops. Their office and the Docs home are on the fringe of the service area and they see 144kb/144kb. Actually I forgot the Doctor can't get it to work at home which is a mile West of the office. This is down in Desoto/South Dallas. |

i think i heard the philidelphia has free wireless internet for every one. verision hates me  every town around here but mine has thier new optical connection that they are testing. the minimum plan is $30/mo for 5mb/2mb. my cable is 10mbs but the highest upload speed i ever got was like 125kbs

| verizon is cancelling that free wirless thing though to get everyone to go to this. it was a wireless access point in all their payphones, i think. |

City of Philadelphia is implementing a free city wide service for outside use and cheap service for poor areas in their homes. They're going to use Tropos Mesh gear which sucks. I have also heard that the city is not actually doing the service, but just granting the access rights to the street light poles for the radios, then subsidizing the service(I mean the state(read Penn. Taxpayers) is subsidizing the project. |

thats the only plan they offered, so yes.
on my way to the airport to pickup g/f, i was listening to theville radio (hooked laptop up to stereo). it was cool. then i checked the flight status at at stoplight. and installed firefox at another one. |
