alright, before I take my computer in for service, how long do lap top batteries last normally? I normally run my computer off of ac but lately my lap top has been pulling the plug in the power cord, charges for about five seconds, then stops, I haven't moved the cord, it isn't loose, and battery is definitely in place.

Last week it was taking me about 6 tries to get it to "stick" with the charging without unplugging it, replugging it in. The cord is in the wall, and the adapter thing isn't loose either.

Might it be the ac power cord shorting out? or is it with my computer? Reason it might be my computer is because my usb port on that side (the right side) does the same thing with my mouse, I tried a different mouse, same thing. I plug either one in the left usb ports, no problem. Ethernet on the right side is fine though...

This site has some pics of the comp so you can see the layout if you wish...

Thanks Don't make too much fun of me, it is my first and only laptop

Have you drop kicked it lately? Since the USB is having the same type issues, sounds like it could be a short, or maybe something losing ground. You could try another charger, to rule that out. Maybe one of the wires to the end of the adapter could have been severed or the wire eventually broke, through normal use. Even though it looks fine, doesn't nean it is. As far as batteries length, that could differ immensely. Good brands, full charges, compared to half charges. Even the initial charge could affect the life of the battery. If your charger has been on the way out for a while, it may not even be charging correctly, making you think the battery is bad, or causing it to go bad prematurely. If you can eventually get the battery to a full charge, see how long it lasts with the adapter unplugged.

Interestingly, the link you have for the laptop states under the PRO/CON info says under CON.. low battery life.

Usually leaving the power supply hooked up will just keep the battery 'topped off' with a charge and the laptop will run off of the power supply. Depending on how good the charging system in the lap top is designed, and the battery type (lithium, Nicad, MetalHydride..) will affect battery life. A year is not uncommon, but that's 'normally' when the battery is being used on a regular basis. My Dell tipically lasts about two years, but I'm on the road with it constantly.

First, is the power supply seperate for the laptop? If so, does it get warm to the touch? 'Warm' is a normal indication it's working properly. If your running just on batteries for a while, then charging it, the supply will get hot while charging. IF the supply is HOT all the time, you got a prob. Could be bad battery, loose connection to laptop (which seems what you describe) short, ect. If the supply is cold to the touch, that the supply most likely is defective.

Don't know if that helped, but, as 'ole Larry says.. "Get-r-done.."

I use it regularly, well did. I can't get it charged now to full, it only charges for five seconds, I unplug replug and again 5 seconds.

When it was working, the charger would be warm, really warm, but not hot.

I ran it the day before yesterday, from a full charge, (didn't realize it wasn't running off ac because I was in game) in dod, and it lasted about an hour and a half, when I used to take it to school, I would work on it in the car and it would last 2 and a half hours, but I wasn't doing anything really, mostly working on notes.

Battery is Li-ion...

Sure sounds like it to me

The battery actually serves as a stablizer or regulator while running off of the power supply, much like a car battery works. It helps keep the voltage constant and semi-supresses power fluctuations. While the laptop may run fine without the battery hooked, I wouldn't suggest it.

Litium-Ion are good batteries, but like Metal-Hydrides, they can take only a certain amount of charges.

The battery isn't cheap, however, your trouble shooting seems to have found it to be bad and the shop will most likely tell you to replace it anyway. If and when you get a new battery, charge it for at least 12 hrs before using the computer.
