I got a laptop with XP Home on it and I want to xfer files to my desktop pc (XP Pro). Both pc's have nic cards.
Is there an easy to do this via USB2 or NIC (Ethernet)?
Thanks.

The simplest way is with just a crossover cable. No further hardware required. You may have to install a simple network protocol like NetBeui. Some people hate NetBeui as a security risk, so you might want to uninstall it as soon as you are done with it. Here is a pretty good website on networking that explains how to do it with older machines and OSes, but the principles are the same with XP and 2000.
http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/net2pc/intro.htm
If you don't like the sound of that, check that website's archive for other simple networking options. The website owner writes pretty good How-To instructions.
If the machine has a CD burner you can go that route, too. Although, I got burned that way when transferring from one job to another. I burned a CD from my old work computer and used it to load up my stuff on the new one. What I didn't do was check to make sure the CD burned all the stuff correctly. A fair amount of stuff was never burned onto the CD properly, so I lost all of that. Bummer.
Anyway, Good luck with it, man.

<edit> Jfet beat me to the first reply post. Yeah, I've never really used the Windows filesharing, but I'm sure you could make that work for you too. That practiallynetworked website is also a good one. Between those two, you should be able to figure out whatever you need to know. </edit> |

if he already has both computers online via broadband, then he is already set up hardware wise, just would have to open the other computer's drives and copy files. |

I do have both connected to my Ethernet Broadband Router which goes to the DSL modem. Can I route through it? _________________ "I Cant HEAR YOU"

ya. im not shure but u can prolly just go into my network places and start putting the files on the network. if it says your dont have access youll have to start going into propertieso on both of them and start fooling withthe security settings. _________________ R.I.P. Blue |

are you using a linksys (or similar) router? if so, thats good. if you have the same login and password on both, you should be able to connect seamlessly between the 2. problem is XP Home is a PITA to get sharing properly. |

Get them both on the same Workgroup, make sure you have a common user on both machines (same password as well) with the right privledges (Administrator works, but beware of the security risks), and then you can either map a drive, or set up security settings of one of the drives and copy away. _________________ Crank the Wonder Llama
