PostPosted: Sun Jan 30, 2005 8:11 pm    Post subject: Tivo Anyone?? Reply with quote

I think this has been posted before but I figured rather than dig up something old, and take the time to find it, I would start a new thread on it.

The question I have is do any of you guys have Tivo and what do you think of it?? I was just at the electronics store today and they are on sale. With as many hours as I am at work now I seem to have little time to stay up and watch programs. Also Nascar season is coming up and I will probably be stuck working for that as well.

Is it worth the investment?? Also would it be worth it to pay the monthly fee or pay for the lifetime thing?? What other charges or options are there to programming or whatever it is called??

The sale is on till 2/5 so I have a week or so before I decide. Any help is appreciated.

i have it and loved it. i say loved because it doesnt work with hdtv. if i didnt have an hdtv id still be using it today. my hdtv cablebox does have tivo like functionality, just not tivo brand. if you dont anticipate going to hdtv soon, then it cant hurt, but hdtv will be the standard soon and its going to require a whole new tivo box to work with it. however if you want to upgrade to hdtv now, i know Cox Communications (where you are at least) has the same cable box i have and its nice! one thing i like about it better than the tivo is it can record 2 things at once (very helpful) or record one and watch another channel. i definitely say a PVR is a good thing, it just depends on which one.

We have the cox box version....My wife loves it! We hardly watch regular tv. everything is timeshifted. we like to collect several weeks of our favorite shows then watch all at once.
It will record two shows at once and play a 3rd.

Greatest thing since. sliced bread!

I dontknow how much TIVO is but we pay 10ish bucks a month for this one.

Tivo isnt available in Canada but the two Sat. TV providers offer Tivo like boxes. The problem with them is that I often want to record digital items and save/archive them after they have been recorded to so that end I am looking at building a HTPC/PVR Box that will record the sattilite signals at the highest quality possible so I can then burn DVDs afterwards.

There is tons of info out there on HLTV PCs and the various OS's around them.....I have not progressed far down the path yet, I am still collecting the required hardware and looking deciding on what OS to go with.

I may have mentioned this before, but I use Beyond TV 3 to digitally record programs as a PVR and you can pre-determine the quality on the recording up front. Your only limited by drive storage space.
I create mpeg2 files with it, then burn them to DVD via Nero.

It comes with a Haupauge tuner card, but the satellite recvr feed can be directly attached to the card (it will accept any of the TV channel feeds like ch 3 or 4) while you either watch it on the pc or your TV. They just came out with a multi-channel unit where you can record more than one channel at a time.

Beyond TV 3 has it's own channel guide service (free) for setting up pre-determined recordings or you can record on the fly. Best part, NO monthly fees.

I've been meaning to configure my TV-tuner PC card for a while, but have been too busy/lazy. For the record it's a KWorld (from NewEgg) but it's not a brand I'd recommend. Personally, I'd say ATi or Hauppage is good stuff, from what I've heard.

If you are wanting the "TIVO" name then yes the only one you can get is DirecTv. If you are just wanting a hd and digital recorder then you can also go with Dish Network. I like ours and easy to use to. Plus they have an info channel that tells you everything I want to know, like the local weather, movies and such.
Plus the best part of DishNetworks deal is you don't have to pay anything to get it, the setup our house with a DVR and upto 3 units for NOTHING. If you want the HD unit its $99.95 plus $9.95 a month extra, although they may have diffrent deals now.

Well continue to debate or discuss as you wish but I have decided to try out the DVR thru Cox Cable. It has 50 hours ? of recording so I think that should cover most everything I would ever watch for the next 2 years or so. Only $10 a month so I figured it couldn't hurt to try it out.

Thanks for the input. Now back to your normally scheduled program.
