Two of North Americas largest family-run breweries have merged to form the world's 5th largest brewery. After much speculation and rumour in the past few months Canada's Molson and the US's Coors this morning officially announced the news that they will be joining forces. The rumours have been widely reported in Canada in the context of the family feud which had erupted within the Molson family over the prospect of the merger.
Distant cousins Eric and Ian Molson had been engaged in a bitter power struggle in the last several months over the direction of the family-controlled company. Last month Eric had announced that he had won the struggle after Ian quit as the company's vice-chair, and now Eric would be left to decide the fate of the 218 year old company started by their ancestor John Molson.
While 10 years ago Molson was diversivied into numerous non-brewing-related endeavors, some 5 years ago it began shedding those companies, bought back the 49% stake of the company controlled by Fosters in Austalia, and two years ago bought Kaiser's breweries in Brazil in an attempt to increase it's influence. But the Kaiser's deal went sour and they lost a significant amount of market share in Brazil. Some analysts say this is what drove Molson into discussion with Coors.
Molson and Coors were already distributing each others products, and had very little market overlap, so the agreement makes sense at face value.
Molson chairman Eric Molson becomes chairman of the new company, and Coors CEO Leo Kiely becomes the new CEO. _________________ Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. |

Would that merger be anything like the rumored merger of FedEx and UPS? I think they were going to name it FedUp
