PostPosted: Wed Jul 14, 2004 3:39 pm    Post subject: Generic FPS question Reply with quote

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB) and a decent Monitor that supports refresh rates up to 120mHz. I set the game viewing area to 1024X768, and I barely manage to get 30-40 fps and my choke is generally around 200.

I looked around on some different threads, and the only thing I could find was to set: fps max 999 from the command window.

Is there something else I can do, or is this the best I should be getting?

Any help is appreciated.

Got to your video card drivers and make sure that v-sync is always off or off by default. Then go and set the fps_max 9999 in game and you should jump way up.

Oooh, thanks. I didn't know about the v-sync thing, but I'll check that tonight. I always do have the latest drivers by ATI. I check it almost daily.

Side note, is that I've tried both D3D and OpenGL, and with both I get about the same rates.

As far as the FPS_MAX, I actually did set it to 9999, I just mistyped it.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

well u want to run in opengl for sure . you might have to start tweaking your cmd_rate etc etc etc. your on high speed i take it. i run the 9700 hundred pro with everything on and i get mid 70`s to 80`s. so that 9800 should have no problems.

And for people that miss the obvious: Make sure you aren't running anything exceptionally tasking in the background

I also recommend downloading HLtoolz. Simpleman turned me onto it a while back and it works great.

All you need to know is your upload/download speed in kbps. It sets everything else automatically for optimum performance. It can cut ping and increase FPS. It has helped me tremendously with DOD.

Also.. if it doesnt bother you.. Turn off the minimap.

Makes a difference in fps.

Also.. some people (like me) like to keep vsync on in opengl. Some get tearing with their video card/ monitors when Vsync is off in opengl with half life based games. If you see any display corruption or glitches turn it back on by default.

Leave this setting off or off by default in directX though. You'll never need it in DirectX.

Make sure you are playing Half-life based mods in OPENGL and not Direct 3d too. Halflife was made for opengl.

Ok, I have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (Cheapest 800mHz bus, when I bought this computer) and dunno if it matters, but 1gig of Corsair ram on an Abit AN7 MB. I did turn off vsync, and I've made sure that DoD runs in OpenGL. It took me a while to get that straight. :|

Anyways, I will look for HLtoolz.

Oh, how do I turn off minimap? I didn't see an option in DoD options. Is that another command switch?

I appreciate ya'lls input. :)

Hit M while in game for the minimap. Its toggles it on and off. Thats the default key if you never changed it.

Ok, so update: I turned off V-Sync, and mini map. With that, I've managed to get up to 50-70 FPS. woo hoo!

I was enjoying that so much, that I decided to download the HLToolz to see if I could pump out a few more FPS. When I installed HLToolz, it tells you to install the "tweaks" into a CS directory. I tried putting it into a few different directories, but I can't get it to load in DoD. Anyone know the correct location to set this up in?

BTW, 50-70 FPS is AMAZINGLY different than 30-40. I almost creamed my shorts.

I think its kinda a wierd that you gets such a low fps with such a high end card. Do you play with all the bells and whistles turned on?
I consistently get 60 fps (I keep vsync on) with my GeForce 2 GTS and my Athlon xp 2200+, but I keep my visual details to a minimum. Its only going to get better, as I ordered a plain jane GeForce 6800 two days ago.

Not sure which bells and whistles you're talking about. I have not messed with too many settings, but I can tell you I don't have antialiasing or antiostropic filtering turned on.

Where do you turn these down?
