The computer my wife has here came with XP Home pre-installed, with the files on the hard disk and needing put onto CD. I put the files onto CD, and I got a working copy of XP Home.

But, while it works when I put it into the drive while Windows is loaded normally and all that, it doesn't provide a function that I'm used to, which allows me to format and partition the hard disk from bootup.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or is there something else I should do?

Your wife should have received a reinstallation disk from the PC maker. It can be used to reinstall the software onto that PC. It cannot be used to install XP some where else.

Thanks - I think the problem was that they didn't tell us how to put it onto cd properly.

To make up for it, a friend gave to me (as a gift), XP Pro, and he told me how to put it to cd properly, so everything is all good now
