This is a site from a Russian woman who goes bike(motorcycle) riding a lot and the Chernobyl area is one of her favorites. According to her website it has been only open to public(at your own risk) for the past few years. I remember when this happened. I was pretty young. I think the date was what April 26, 1984. Some of you guys on here were not even born then, so may know nothing about this event. Pretty much was a meltdown of a Russian Nuke Plant that killed thousands and killed many thousands later on due to radiation cancer. The Russian Government eventually concreted in, the plant to seal in the radiation, thus allowing over time for the area around it to become less dangerous.

LOL!!!. In one of the captions she said that if one were to get fairly close to the plant that you would glow at night. I thought it was kind of cool and sad at the same time. Seeing what the place was like now. The pics showing the military base with all the helos and trucks was erie. Especially with all that stuff still there after 20 years. You would think if the area has been reopen to the public that the people that lived there once would go back and look for their stuff.

I found it interesting that the guy who tried to stop the meltdown was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Glowing trees. Sounds cool for some reason.

I find it reassuring that the use of nuclear bombs is really really bad...

Then I have to think...why wait. lets get it over with nuke em!

Oh well wormwood is alive and well and only looking for a trigger.

I found it a somewhat sobering read. Most news events nowadays hardly have any long-lasting effects on our memory and this was beginning to fade fast until now. It's good that her site serves as a constant reminder of human folly and complacency.

Btw, that biker chick's got bigger nutz that I do.... riding in like that.

Reading and looking at that brings a very eerie feeling. I remember when that happened we all thought that there was a CHANCE that the killer radioactive cloud would reach North America. If it had who knows what would or could have happened over here.
And ya Munkey theres no way I'd do what she is doing.

Winds carried the radioactive debris north and west, showering radioactive particles over the Soviet republics of Ukraine, Byelorussia and Russia, most of Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and as far away as Japan and the United States.

What sickens me the most is that they literally sacraficed those fire fighters and helecopter pilots for nothing. They thought it was just a normal fire, when in reality it was a nuclear meltdown, which was spewing enough radiation to kill them within the hour.

I remember that too. I remember watching the news for word on how far the cloud had reached . It doesn't seem like 20 years ago.

Well here is an interesting British site on Chernobyl. I was wrong on the date. It took place in 1986, not 1984. Which would make it 18 years ago. According to this site after containing Reactor 4(the one that blew) the plant has been in operation up to July of 2000(shudders). The plant is in what is now Ukraine.
