Things to do when setting up a bank account
Make sure you do not link your accounts.
Make sure you do not let them give you over draft protection.
Make sure your atm card account is kept relativley small, especially if it has Visa type qualities. Even when you set it up with a 500 limit they are always upgrading it without your approval. You have to tell them NO I want the small limit!
Do not trust the bank to keep your accounts unlinked, they do it automaticly, check often.
Do not put all your money into one bank. If you have a problem with one you still have access to monies from the other account.
Do not believe or expect that your bank will protect you or take care of you. They can and will throw you under the bus in a heart beat.
Do not keep your credit cards where others can write the numbers down.
Never use your main bank account for online purchases. set up a seperate account.
Be careful when using your cards. they are now putting little cameras everywhere to gather your information. YOu do not have to lose your card to have it stolden...
If there is a problem and the bank asks " do you still have your card...and you do...dont admit it! They then do not want to help you anymore.
They wont stop charges that are pending. they say you have to pay first then contest... This is the worst. If your not screaming at them by now....

Sunday morning phone call from bank...we think there is unusual activity on your account... sure enough someone had drained it dry with fradulant internet card purchases.
The kicker is the bank is not set up to protect you, they are set up to take your money regardless. They will set it up so someone can get to all your money.
The banks just suck.
So a 1000 dollars of charges are reserved but no monies have been paid. but they wont stop it they will pay the money and then you have to try and get the money back from whoever took the card. I say STOP now.
The monies already paid our only recourse is to ask the card taker to give it back. now why on earth would they do that??? then they would be out the money.
Plus the bottom line is it was set up so that we would only lose 500 if the worst happened...but the bank just increases the limits on their own. _________________ Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. |

Words of Wisdom my friend, words of wisdom. Didn't have have quite the same problem as you, but did have to fight some minor charge from the internet. All the bank could do for me was provide the company name and phone number. I had to call them myself. Boiled down to being easier to cancel my debit/check card and pay $2 for a new one, than fight the nefarious company for the $30-$40. Funny thing is you think I would learn from that. But since when do I learn from any of my mistakes. Another kicker that opens you up to fraud is that my bank and many others work were all electronic charges are honored no matter if you have money in your account or not. Its a nice feature for those of us who are bad with money and over spend. But don't want bounce checks. But it opens you up for fraudulent charges that you have to fight an up hill battle to get corrected. Almost all fraudulent charges now days are going to be electronic charges.
Another kicker. You shouldn't do direct ACH drafts from your account. But so many companies, primarily utility companies, push for you to set up auto drafts to pay your monthly payment. Why they will not let you pay with the debit/check card I don't know. At least with the check card you can cancel it if you feel there have been fraudulent charge. But I could go on and on and on. But free cold beer and dinner paid for by my Old Man awaits and priorities must take place. |
