Argh, this is what happened:
I usually ping at about 80-150.
I joined a server that I've never joined before and I got about 45-80 ping.
After joining that server, suddenly I ping at 600-1000 on every other server EXCEPT for that one I joined last night - where I get like 80. On TV1 I get about 115 ping, but on TVIV I get like 550 - even though last night I was getting 80 before I joined that server.
So, did it overwrite some of my settings or something? I tweaked around with cl_updaterate and my rate and whatever, they seem to be fine. My connection speed is set to < 256K DSL (still) but I swear something is screwed. Is it something in my config file? |

Humm another reason to do like my wife says" get your appetite up out but come home to eat".
No idea Ten Yard, did you notice anything being downloaded as you signed on the OUTSIDE server. _________________

open your command prompt, then type tracert then an ip addy (use one of the servers, that way you can see what your ping is to it ) then copy and paste what you see, if there's a problem in your route, you'll notice immediately when the ping jumps up from one hop to another
Use this thread for reference and stuff

But I simply don't understand what the hell this means. I know that one server is screwing up my ping, but what do I do about it? IP bomz0r them? |

This is what I get for TV IV, it's that same IP that's bottlenecking stuff - 64.230.231.141.
So what does that mean? Does it just mean that that particular server is screwing up today? Or can I get around it somehow? |

Okay, by using the principles of deduction that my brain affords me, I've figured out two things:
1) If I download a file from Regina (70 Miles from me) I get normal download speed.
2) If I download a file from anywhere further than that, I get like 1/8th speed.
3) That means that the bloody IP/server: 64.230.231.141 is screwing things up for me.
4) It's not Steam, it's the path in which information travels from my computer to the server that I'm playing.
5) When I was still getting 110 ping on TV I an hour ago, it was bypassing the bottleneck server/IP and/or using a different path.
6) Deduction is FUN STUFF OMG!1
How do I get rid of that server in my path? |

I am now unable to connect to the ville 4. It says that the server could not validate me or something like that. I tried getting onto theville 1 and it worked. Steam is acting weird for Fluffy and another one of my friends. I think I'll just hang it up for awhile. (the day) |

well, I think the only real big thing you can do is call your ISP and tell them about that bad hop. Yes, you deduced correctly that that particular ip is what's hosing you down. Give them a call and let them know it's bad, then see what they can do about it. _________________ Under construction!!! |
