question: If I were to switch from outlook express to an independent email client like eudora, would I reduce the risk of my computer catching as well as transmitting viruses? I seem to get the feeling that some of these little buggers are targeted specifically at OE. Are other mail clients less susceptable than outlook?

i have really been getting bombarded lately and wanted to minimize any problems....I have shut off html and I don't download any messages with attachments from the mail server. but I want to be sure I cover all the bases...

BTW, my virus software is catching and removing the bugs before they get into my system, so far...

Hmm. I use Outlook Express with I think 5 accounts and never had a virus come through. None that Norton has detected at least...

Hmm, it all depends on weither the emails are stored on your computer or not. I think that the emails are downloaded on to your computer in some way with outlook, though Im not sure. If they are on a seperate server - like hotmail - then they wont be downloaded onto your computer. If the email provider scans regularly and scans the attachments for viruses, you shouldnt really have any problem.

Yeah it downloads all the emails when it checks for them. I think they are in some kind of cache file that's probably meant to be safe. My anti-virus scans all the emails as they come in, so hopefully that will screen out the viruses.

We run Eudora at work and every email is scanned coming in and going out.

We've been infected a couple times. The latest infection was from the mymail worm.

Not sure which mail program is safer.

And you would be right there. It's probably the most commonly used business email program. I'd say most worms/viruses are designed to beat Microsoft products more so than stand alone programs such as Eudora. But I am no expert.

All email apps are susceptable to virus attack. The best bet is to insure you have a good anti-virus app running at all times. If you cannot spend the $$ for one there is a great FREE program called Avast that works great. It will update it self as well with any new dat files or program updates. Go to www.Avast.com to get it.

Also make sure that you email does not use the auto preview feature. If there is a virus embedded in the text of the email and you have this turned on you just got the virus. Turn it off now.
