Hey all, my dad is thinking of getting DirectPC so we can get rid of AOL. Do any of you out there have any input on pros or cons to it? I wanna be able to help him out with it. Any (useable) input would be appreciated, and yes, we know AOL sucks. My dad complains about it every day. Thanks in advance, Snagg

Well, have you ever used a Direct TV satellite system in the rain? or during abad storm? I have no direct experience with Direct PC, but I know Direct TV gets all staticky and loses its signal in storms and rain.
Hope it helps.
I would suggest (If its in your area) Cable or DSL, much more reliable, and I am assuming its cheaper.

We have DirectTV, and there are some problems during storms, but not that often. If we lived in the city, we could get cable and/or DSL, but we live out in the rural burbs, and no cable or cell coverage, or anything out here.

What kind of pings do you get from the satellite, Snaggle? I was under the impression that satellite systems give you good bandwidth, but high latency compared to other broadband hookups.

1. It is very costly to buy and install around $1000.00, for the 2 way satelite. Otherwise you must use a phone line for upload and the satelite for download.
2. Monthly cost about $60 to $80.
3. If your Dad has to use VPN (Virtual Private Nettworking) for work, Direct PC will not work. That is because VPN is a tunnel and so is Direct PC and they only support VPN with in corporate networks no private users.
6 All the other thing mentioned before.
Hope this helps.
