(Make a Back-up of your registry before you begin)

Start/Run type regedit
Select the entry Computer.
Above select File, then Export.Choose your folder where
you are going to save this. (Create a folder named
System Back-Up and save the registry there as Original 1-25-04)click ok.

Another important step is to Create a New Restore point.

Start/Run type msconfig hit Enter.
Select Launch System Restore.
Create a New restore point and name it Original 1-25-04 click ok.
Now if you have any thing go wrong(which you won't
if you follow this step by step)

Disable the XP Default Search Assistant

When you click the Search button in Internet Explorer (the magnifying glass) this brings up the Search Companion sidebar with stupid pooch and a pretty useless search engine, with this you can replace the default MSN Search engine with anyone of your choice (I am using Google)

My home page is set to Yahoo so what I can't find using this, I just click the old search button and boom there is google.(why waste extra memory with extra applications)

1)
Start/Run type Regedit and go to key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]if you are using XP Home this key isn't there and must be created,

A)On the right side of the Main directory right-click anywhere

B)select "New" and then the option "String Value" scroll down the list until you see your new key.

C)Name the new entry (This is case sensitive mind ya) "Use Search Asst" (without the quotes)
then hit Enter.

D)Now double-click this new string. where it says value Data enter "no" (without the quotes)
click ok.

Changing Internet Explorer Search Assistant to Google

2)While still in this directory [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] you again have to create a New string value (XP Home does not have it) by right-clicking anywhere in the Main *.* and select *New String Value*,Scroll down to it at the bottom and name the new entry "Search Bar"(Remember this is Case Sensitive)(without the quotes)Click ok.

3)Double-click this and in it's Value Data enter "http://www.google.com/ie" (without the quotes)click ok.

4)Look for the Entry that is already there called "Search Page" and Double-click this key and remove the data that is there and replace the Value Data with http://www.google.com (without the quotes)Click ok.

5)Now go to the top of your registry and navigate your way to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search] Double-click the key named "SearchAssistant" and in it's Value Data enter "http://www.google.com/ie" (without the quotes)click ok.

6)Above the SearchAssistant key you will see a key named "CustomizeSearch" Double-click this and remove the value in the Data Value and replace it with "http://www.google.com"(without the quotes)click ok.

(XP Pro may be totally different but most of the sites that document this trick forget about telling you about this key resulting in this tweak failing. Trust me, I messed with it over 2 hours before realizing it and now it runs smooth)

Now When you click the Search button in Internet Explorer (the magnifying glass) or press CTRL + E to bring up the Search sidebar, if you've disabled the default Search Assistant interface (see (1), you can customize the sidebar to have any nifty search interface instead by just removing the Google addresses with your choice That way you don't get the "sponsored links" and all the default BS that the default interface shows you.

Change all of the registry entries above to get this tweak working properly. If any of the above registry entries don't exist, create them as new Strings and set their values to the addresses above. You can see the effects of this tweak straight away in Internet Explorer without a reboot.
