Here is some old TF related stuff that is from a site that I was glad to be a part of
Anybody remember this:
Installation
How do I install TF?
Make a directory under your Quake directory called fortress. Unzip the TF 2.5 release file in that directory. Then, run quake with the -game fortress parameter.
Miscellaneous
How do I get the Grappling Hook?
The Grappling Hook is off by default. The server decides whether or not players are allowed to use it. If you are the server, or you're playing a single player game, you can turn it on by setting the temp1 variable to 1024. E.g. In the console, you type:
temp1 1024 The Hook will be available on the next map you play.
Note that some TF maps forcefully turn off the Hook. You cannot use the Hook on these maps, even with the temp1 variable set to 1024.
How do I change classes during a game?
You can only change classes during a game if the server allows you to. If you are the server, you can allow this by setting the deathmatch variable to 3. E.g. In the console, you type:
deathmatch 3 Players will be able to change classes now. See the readme.txt file for more info.
Where can I find TF Maps?
Currently, there's no one-stop repository for TF Maps, due to the fact that there are many different TF map-makers. TFS is currently working on providing this service, which will be available here when it's done.
Until then, I suggest checking out these places:
One Stop Map Shop
Ethereal TF's Map Page
TF Maps on ftp.cdrom.com
Where can I find TF Servers?
We don't maintain a list of normal quake TF servers, due to the trouble it takes to keep it uptodate. But, there are currently approximately 90 QuakeWorld TF servers attached to the TF master at idsoftware. If you don't know what QuakeWorld is, I suggest you check out QuakeWorld Central. It has all the files and info you need to get QuakeWorld running.
Errors
Why do I get a Not enough RAM. Try using -heapsize 1600 error when I connect to QW TF servers? There is an error in the QuakeWorld message. It should read '-heapsize 16000'. We recommend launching quake with the command line arguments: '-zone 1024 -heapsize 16384'.
Why do I get a CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message
error when I connect to QW TF servers?
This message occurs when you are using a different version of Quake to the server. You should upgrade to WinQuake 1.07 or later. You can usually get around it by reconnecting to the server: type "reconnect".
Why do I get an error about not having *16.mdl when I connect to a server running the Hunted map?
An invalid version of the Hunted map was distributed a while ago. To fix this problem, you need to get a valid version, which you can download here.
GLQuake and GLQWCL
Why can't I see the correct skins on other players in GLQuake?
GLQuake handles skins differently to normal Quake, and hence, the normal method of setting skins doesn't work.
Why can't I see the correct skins on other players in GLQWCL?
GLQWCL handles skins like GLQuake when the noskins variable is set to 1, and handles them like normal QW when the noskins variable is set to 0. When playing a QW TF game with GLQWCL, make sure the noskins variable is set to 0, by typing in the console: noskins 0
My computer locks up when I try to run GLQWCL with TF 2.5!
GLQWCL cannot handle animated skins... something we found out about after we released TF 2.5. There is a fix for it, which you can download here. Just unzip it into your fortress directory. If you've got the Fix, and you still have the same problem, it's because there is no TF pak0.pak in the fortress directory. If you got all the TF files by connecting to a QW server, or you unpacked the TF 2.5 pak0.pak and deleted it, the Fix won't work. Simply rename the pak1.pak from the Fix zipfile to pak0.pak and it should run fine.

TeamFortress 2.9 QW Released
Thanks again to Gudlyf the QuakeWorld version of 2.9 has been finished. This is a QuakeWorld SERVER ONLY Update. If you don't run a QuakeWorld server, you don't need this. Sorry it took so long, but as you well know, we're busily working on Half-Life: TeamFortress. Head over to the Downloads page to get 2.9. If you're interested, you can check out the version info.

TeamFortress 2.8 Released
Thanks to the efforts of Gudlyf and various adamant members of the community, TF 2.8 has been finished. Many bugs were fixed, cheats prevented, and controversial decisions made to ensure you can have a cheat-free game of TF. We'd like to thank Gudlyf for his efforts, and for putting up with some of the crap the community threw at him. He undertook a fairly thankless task and came through with the results. Many people are happy to offer suggestion and criticism, but not many want to be the person who has to make the final decisions.
Thanks also to John Machin for updating the TF Install program. Head over to the Downloads page to get TF 2.8. If you're interested, you can check out the version info.

TeamFortress 1 Maintenance
With TFS working fulltime on TF2, maintenance on TF1 isn't getting the attention it deserves. So, we've decided to hand over TF1 maintenance to Gudlyf. He'll be working on killing off the known bugs/cheats, and any new ones that appear. He will be maintenance only. This means he wants to know of any bugs/cheats you know of. This means he does not want to hear your suggestions on new classes, weapons, abilities, etc.
Please mail him any bug reports you have.

TFCon Flops
TFSoftware is back in Seattle after visititing a rather unsuccessful TFCon98. Last minute changes to venue resulted in a lot of participants never finding the event and if not for the server provided by Natural Born Killers and the network equipment from Clan Null, there would have been no gaming at all. Our thanks go out to them, as well as Darrell Janke, Jake and Marla for their help in getting us to and from the event and for providing some organization. None the less, we had fun and it was good to play some TF for a while. All we seem to do lately is test TF. The paintball rocked, though it was a shame there were not more players. Finally an extra thankyou to Mix for driving us around and getting us a monitor. Additional info on the event can be found on the TFPCon pages.

TF2 Beta Tester Rumours
There's been a few rumours/information releases on TF news pages that have apparently come from a TF2 beta tester. We don't know what game they are beta testing, but it sure isn't TF2. If someone claims to be a TF2 beta tester and gives you some information, ignore it. Our beta testers were hand picked. We trust them, they trust us. They won't be giving information out.

TFII Audio Demo
Want to hear a bit of TF II? Here is the TFII MP3 Demo (1.7meg). All the sounds and music in the demo are from TF II. Of course there are a lot of sounds that did not make it into the demo as well. If you dont have a program to play MP3s, visit Winamp.

TeamFortress II Map Code
The TFII map code is reaching a stable state, so we've decided to release some of it to give mapmakers some idea of what they'll be able to do with it. The map code is a scripting language much like C, so if you don't have any programming experience you might not find it terribly interesting... but if you're planning on doing some TF2 mapmaking, I'd suggest you read it because it will give you a better idea of what the TF2 map code is capable of. We're using a map called "mc2" to test the current map code. You can read a walkthrough of the mc2 mapC, which starts off with a bang by walking you through the most complex thing you'll probably ever want to do with mapC, or you can take the plunge and look directly at the mc2 mapC.
If you've read through either of the above, and you don't understand it, please don't mail us asking for help. This is not the mapC documentation we'll release with TF2... it's merely something we'd written for our mapmakers that we thought we'd also release to the public. If you have read through it, understood it, and have a request for a new Interface Function or Global Script, please mail it to us.

TeamFortress 2.7 Server Update
TF 2.7 is now available on the Downloads page. It's a server side only update, so if you don't run your own server, you don't need this.If you're interested, you can check out the version info.
TeamFortress II
Yes, we are still working on TF II for Quake2. We still have no set release date.
TF Con
Just a couple of clarifications about TF Con. We are not involved with the organisation of TF Con, so please don't mail us questions about it. We do hope to attend it, but that is not a definate at this time.

Merry Christmas!!
It's a day early, but since we won't be here for the next couple of days, it's the best we can do.
TeamFortress 2.666 Christmas Mode
Since a few people have mailed me asking for it, I've recompiled TF 2.666 with the Birthday options in, slightly tweaked to make it aimed at Christmas instead of the TF Birthday. It's a QuakeWorld server update only... if you don't run QW, you can't use it, and if you don't run a server, you don't need it. If you are a server, download the TF 2.666 Christmas Mode (247K). Unzip it and put the qwprogs.dat in your quake\fortress directory. Then, run your server, and set the localinfo key "birthday" to "on". e.g. localinfo birthday on And restart the map.
Birthday/Christmas mode will stay on, unless you kill the server, in which case you might want to add it to your server.cfg. _________________ http://www.nosmacktards.com |
