CJM'S GENERAL HELP & SUPPORT GUIDE®
Updated 10/16/03
This Thread Contains Many Helpfull Topics, Read It In Its Entirety and im sure you will find something Helpfull.

As a general rule, ask yourself these questions first

-are you running the latest HL & DoD versions? this can be the cause to many problems. since won is now down, you need to have steam fully updated.

if you do not want to wait in line at file planet, find a site such as www.4players.de that has fast downloads and no waiting (yes, it is in german, but all you have to do is type half-life 1110 in the suchen bar/search bar). get the version that upgrades to anything, if you dont speak german or cant figure it out just c/p it into the google language tool.

Have you installed any new programs lately
-some new programs or maybe some files/programs or whatever you d/l in the past few days or so may be affecting DoD. try removing whatever you installed that you think is affecting it. sometimes its newer video drivers that have not been throughly tested and are the problem, but not always.
-did you download any custom files of any sort? somtimes customs skins/sounds/models can cause HL and its mods to not work. most of the time it is due to an error or the p_model is not correct. if you get the message "P_Modelname" is incorrect or something of that nature then this model will not work and is causing this problem. simply remove it and you will be fine. also if you installed custom models and or sprites and get the defaults its b/c the server has disabled custom files and makes you default yours.

-do you have the latest drivers for your Motherboard/Videocard/Soundcard. sometimes running the incorrect drivers for one of these hardware items is the cause.

Motherboards make sure you install either the latest via/intel chipset drivers. if you do not know the version of the intel ones, its ok as http://www.guru3d.com/files/ has a intel chipset identification program that will tell you. via chipset drivers are easier, just d/l the latest one and you will be fine. as a general rule make sure you are running the latest versions.

Drivers/lLow FPS
-if you have any driver troubles/Low FPS
-make sure you are running the latest drivers for your system and OS. i warn you now, some newer driver versions for the geforce series of cards is not very stable. stick to the tried and trusted ones i described under videocards. Unless you have a signifigant increase in performance with newer drivers.

-General Driver Updates can be found @ http://www.guru3d.com/files/ included files are:VideoCard, Chipset, BenchMarks, and various other Programs/Utilities.

Videocards some of the time HL may have problems with your video card. some common reasons are as follows: too old a driver (get current ones @ http://www.guru3d.com/files/ ). or running DoD in software or Direct 3d mode, you want to run HL/DoD in open gl if your card supports it.
if you have a newer geforce3 card, or a geforce 4000 series id recommend not running any driver over the 30.82 series. all the other series (40 series) i have had problems with or they run very poorly. if its tried and tested then why bother fixing it (30.82's).
i myself run them on a intel P4 1.3 ghz and a g4 4400 128mb card and have had no problems ever. although older systems may not run as smooth on the 30.82s, i would try the 28.32s or the 29.42 drivers. each of these drivers i personalay tested on quite a few machines and found them over all much better than any of the inbetween versions such as the 28.90s or whatever. however if you use the old drivers and find that they arent so great, by all means update to latest ones and see if you get any better performance. go to www.nvidia.com for Nvidia cards.
Unless you have a signifigant increase in performance with newer drivers.

Not running in Open_Gl mode can be a big problem, as dod doesnt really support other modes such as software or Direct3d very well. to correct this problem simply go thru the ingame config and change the videomode, to open gl or direct 3d (open gl is fully supported by the geforce series and the radeon series of cards) direct3d (d3d) is also supported but the geforce cards are not well suited as are the radeons. plus the fact dod and hl wont run very well on Direct3d in the 1st place.
Voodoo cards do run dod, however they are sometimes buggy.

XP Refresh Rates
Many people complain that after installing WINXP that thier fps in any online game is locked to 60 fps. this is a nice feature in XP for those that dont care or dont play any games, however its annoying to those who play hl and its mods and want higher framerates. the fix is simple, as XP is locked at 60 hz, all you need to do is download the XP Refresh Rate fix (can be found off google, or http://www.guru3d.com/files/ ) and use the proggie to change your refresh rate. but be warned, if your monitor does not support the Refresh Rate you select, you may get an out of sync error when you restart. if this happens just start in safe mode and run the proggie again and change the hertz to a lower setting. normal buttons to activate safemode:holding X button on startup, dell=f8, compaq=alt. ive never dealt with anything else so i do not know other manufactures as thier key may be different. call them up and ask them if you cant figure it out by process of elimination.

Soundcards
-many problems such as HL voice not working and distorted sound, or even lag induced by sound can occur from using a not so great card, or older drivers. go to the manufactures website for drivers and install them as the 1st step if you have sound lag, or have problems with voice. some cards still will sound very bad even with the new drivers, and not produce voice/nice sound (you need a duplex card to use a mic and voice in HL) if this is the cases you might want to invest in a new card such as a soundblaster series of cards-the SoundBlaster Live! being a nice option at an affordable price. (cheap but great cards)

Filters and Updating Server lists
There seems to be a big problem with the updating in the ingame menu, as it stands now there is no definitive cure to it. but you can try going into the hl folder and deleting the favsvrs file. but be warned you will lose all your favs and whatnot and will start over from scratch. i strongly urge you to make a back up of that file some where else on your pc. this does fix the problem about 90% of the time.

Problems with the sniper rifle black/whiteout
-make sure your running open gl
-configuration, video modes, check open gl
-if your card does not support open gl: not much you can do except buy one that does. both nvidia and ati cards are farily cheap if you dont buy the top top top of the line models. ie the geforce 4 4400 128mb which is considerably less than the 4600 version.

Crash to desktop Problems
-have you added the "-nocdaudio" (w/o ")cmd line to your dod shortcut target line? and does it look similar too this "C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -nocdaudio -game dod"
-Another main problem is when you try to select a team or a weapon and it crashes or the pick a team screen comes up and it crashes. this is most common on voodoo cards, you need get the wicked gl drivers for your voodoo card, as well as new menu selection pics for dod- get them here http://clanhpr.tripod.com/hpr/id3.html
-If you have XP try running DoD in compatibilty mode, right clikc the dod shortcut and open proprties its in there.
-try re-installing dod, simple as it is..alot of the time it works.

Recording Demos and Losing Flags
-you MUST before typing record/starting to record MUST switch into spectator and then go back into the game and start recording, this will fix the problem.
-if you do loose them just set cl_hud_objectives 1 in the console to get them back. or you can do the same by running the dodutility in the dod folder and checking show objectives.

Half-Life Connection Rates

Half-Life Connection
There are many settings that may be tweaked to improve performance while playing Half-Life over the Internet from within the game.
-First verify that the rate of data transfer matches the connection rate of the modem's Internet connection. To do this, enter an Internet game. Press the tilde key located next to the 1 key on the keyboard (~) and type: rate (and press ENTER)

[thanks Red Squirrel]
A rate value will be displayed. Please verify that the rate corresponds to the modem/broadband's Internet connection speed using the chart provided below.
note: If you get choke when increasing your rate, increase your cl_cmdrate as well incrementally

Connection Speed Transfer Rate
28.8: 2500
33.6: 3500
56.6: 5000
Cable modems and DSL: 8000-10000
T1 and Higher: 12000

If the rate does not match the connection speed use the following command to set the correct rate.

rate 2500 (and press ENTER)(28.
rate 3500 (and press ENTER)(33.6)
rate 5000 (and press ENTER)(56.6)
rate 8000 (and press ENTER)(Cable and DSL)

-Another adjustment may be made by altering the number of frames displayed per second. To do this, enter an Internet game. Press the tilde key located next to the 1 key on the keyboard (~) and type:
fps_max
or
fps_modem 25
or
fps_modem 20

These commands are only a beginning with what you can do to improve performance within the game. You can find even more information on tweaking the game at various site like:

http://halflife.pcgame.com

Also there is a great site for tweaking your overall system performance including modems. This will be in addition to their Half-Life tweaking guide:

http://www.tweak3d.net

Tweaking your Half-Life connection Cont.
Some of this duplicates the above
In many cases tweaking your HL connection can help your connection problems and improve performance. Here are some commands and variables. -w/ Help from Rubber

These Commands can also be accessed by starting HL with dod, goto multiplayer then customize then advanced.

Commands are located in your Config.cfg file, open with notepad or Quickviewplus.

cl_cmdrate : set the number of times per second that the client will update the server. Leave at 30 (or lower) for modems, set to 35-55 for Cable or DSL, 50 for LAN games. (default 30)

cl_dlmax : set the maximum number of kilobytes to download from a server (default 128)

rate : set rate that client will send data to the server in bytes per second (suggested starting values: 1000-5000 modem, 5000-7000 ISDN, 6000-10000 cable/ DSL, 7000-20000 T1, 20000+ LAN) -- bad values cause LAG! turn on the r_netgraph 3 to help evaluate different values, and try non-integers like 4001.0528 (default 9001.204)

cl_updaterate : set number of updates client will request from the server each second. In general, the more players in the game, the lower this should be. Lower than 12 will cause choppiness, but 15 may be great for some slow connections. Cable and DSL connections may like 30-40, unless there are too many players on the server. For lan games, use 50. (default 20)

In relation to the correct rate settings etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Players with broadband connections will have configurations very different to the values derived so far. Firstly, a broadband connection will always have more bandwidth available than the server can provide. As such, rate and cl_rate both need to be set to their maximum values so that the client is using all available bandwidth.

The maximum value for both rate and cl_rate is 20,000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The maximum client side is 20,000 but a lot of servers cap this to around 9999. It's best to have something ridicoluosly high to make sure you're giving DoD/CS all of the bandwidth it needs, since a broadband connection can more than cope with it.

http://www.summerblue.net/games/cs_...ion_config.html

There is a link to the report I quoted from, it explains things quite good there.

Also

If you look here http://www.summerblue.net/games/cs_..._behaviour.html . You will see a good video of why sometimes you might see miss decals appear directly behind a person you are shooting but not actually hit the person. This is because it's all client side prediction for most of what you see. As you can see on the video the person shoots the glass but bullet holes appear actually on the glass, which would be impossible.

Just out of interest the above really, and the amount of times I see people saying their bullets went behind someone's head because they saw the smoke puff.

You need DivX to watch the video. Right click on the video and select "Play"

Many thanks to Tekkobra for this little tidbit, i started to write my own but realized that yours was written much better.

If all else fails try reinstalling dod or half-life and see if your problem is cured. If that desont work you may want to try deleting your whole sierra folder and doing a fresh install of HL 1110 and dod 1.0

Hunk_Alloc Failed
-this is a common problem, its caused by HL asking for more ram than it truly needs. You need to fix the heapsize in DoD, the heapsize goes in the DoD shortcut on your desktop.

First, right click the dod shortcut then choose 'Properties'. In the 'Target' box you add all your extra commands.

ex.(my shortcut)
C:\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game dod -numericping -heapsize 120000 -nocdaudio

Just change that to fit your HL directory and your preferences(the only part that is necessary is 'C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game dod').

For the heapsize, it is the amount of RAM that you want to allocate to HL(in kilobytes). If you've got 256+ megs of RAM you can probably allocate about half to HL(131072 which also happens to be the maximum that you can allocate). Just play around with it and see what works.

NET_SendPacket ERROR: WSAEINTR
It could be something called Qos, you need to disable it if you don't want to uninstall it like other suggestions.
1. Go to Control Panel
2. Go to Administrative tools
3. Go to Services
4. Go to QOS packet scheduler and click disable.

Or
To fix this problem you need to go to the system.ini file and check the [vcache].
If there is nothing there, add these lines under the word [vcache]:
MinFileCache=****
MaxFileCache=****
It should look like this.

[vcache]
MinFileCache=****
MaxFileCache=****

Replace **** with one of the following values:

If you have from 16-32 MB of RAM:
MinFileCache=2048
MaxFileCache=2048

If you have from 32-96 MB of RAM:
MinFileCache=4096
MaxFileCache=4096

If you have 128 MB of RAM or more:
MinFileCache=8192
MaxFileCache=8192

you can get a nifty little program that will do this virtually for you called cachebooster (found in Tekks XP sticky)

Another way would be setting the maximum amount of RAM HL/DoD is allowed to use.
Right click on your DoD shortcut and select "Properties". Right now the Target line should
read something like this:
C:\Sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game dod
Change it to this: C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game dod -heapsize *****
Replace ***** with 75% of your total memory in KB, ex. you have 128 MB RAM then
heapsize should be 98304. 1 MB = 1024 KB.

(more info on the heapsize is located int he Hunk_Alloc Failed section)

Radeon And Esc Menu Problems
-if using a radeon card and the new 3.2 see to be causing a problem, the only fix atm is the older 3.1 and or newerversions of the catalyst drivers. installing them seems to work in all cases dealt with so far.

Windows XP and HL.exe Errors
Alright i think i have found the soltution to the XP hanging problem when trying to connect as well as HL crashing under XP.
Explained on these sites heres- http://www.opengl.org/discussion_bo...TML/002878.html and http://www.xp-refresh.net/
-They Mention that the XP refresh rate fix tools will solve the problem, im not 100% on this but anything is worth a try for now.
-Get the XP Refresh Rate Fix at www.guru3d.com under the downloads section.

~ Tweaking in game menus:

Configuration -> Sounds

High Quality Sound: Enable to have higher quality sound, usually increases CPU usage.

Enable A3D and EAX support: If your soundcard supports EAX or A3D, you can have a richer soundworld. Usually increases CPU usage.

Configuration -> Video -> Video Modes

If you don't have a 3D video card in your computer, select Software.
If you have a 3D card that doesn't support OpenGL, select Direct3D.
If you have a 3D card that supports OpenGL, select OpenGL.
If you have a 3Dfx card select OpenGL and 3Dfx Mini Driver.
I think that 640*480 is the lowest playable resolution, but if you REALLY need fps, you can select 400*300 what usually boasts great performance.

Configuration -> Video -> Video Options

The only thing that affects performance is Screen Size, but it doesn't work on all video cards. The smaller the faster.

Multiplayer -> Customize

Enable sound in this mod: ONLY uncheck if you are in a DESPERATE need of performance!

Multiplayer -> Customize -> Advanced

Auto-help: Unchecking should get rid of that dog. Little performance boost i think.

Use Dynamic Crosshair: If you have a 33MHz machine you can get a performance boost by unchecking this =P.

Teammates identified with overhead icons: Same description as above, aye!

Multiplayer decal limit: Lower = more performance.

Quality of special effects: Lower = more performance.

Show fog: Aye! Fog! A huge performance boost! (You have to turn the map off for the fog to work i think...)

Template:

cl_fog "1"
gl_max_size "128"
____________________

bgmvolume: 1 = enable CD audio (0 may improve performance)

cl_gibcount: sets the number of gibs to spawn when blowing an enemy to bits. 0 may improve FPS.

cl_giblife: sets the time in seconds that gibs remain before disappearing. 0 may improve FPS.

cl_gibvelscale: sets the scale factor for gib graphics. High may improve FPS.

cl_himodels: 1 = enable high quality player models. Set to 1 for slightly better quality player models (and slightly lower fps).

gl_dither: 1 = enable dithering (0 = higher fps).

gl_keeptjunctions: 0 = enable allowing slight cracks between textures, setting to 1 may look better on some video cards, but will be a bit slower (fewer fps).

gl_lightholes: 1 = enable light holes (0 may improve perfomance).

gl_max_size: set the maximum texture size (higher may look better, but may slow performance if set too high, must be countable by 64).

gl_picmip: set rendering quality (0,1,2, higher is faster and lower quality).

gl_playermip: set player rendering quality (0,1,2, higher is faster and lower quality).

gl_round_down: set texture size rounding-down value (higher rounds more, resulting in lower quality and higher FPS).

gl_smoothmodels: 1 = enable model smoothing. Disabling (0) may increase fps a bit.

gl_spriteblend: 1 enable blending sprite graphics (0 = faster), 0 is recommended if you use picmip.

gl_texsort: 1 enables brighter and more vivid textures, but slows performance.

gl_texturemode: set the rendering mode: in order from lowest quality (fastest) to highest quality (slowest), [type] options are: GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_NEAREST, GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST, GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR, GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR. Think of the 1st two as low and high quality for hardware that supports bilinear filtering, and the 2nd two as low and high quality for hardware that supports trilinear filtering.

gl_wateramp: 1 = enable amplified (higher) waves in water. 1 may decrease FPS.

gl_ztrick: 1 speeds up rendering on some 3dfx cards (and maybe others), but may cause flickering on some video cards.

hisound: enable high-quality sound (1=22kHz, 0=11kHz) see also loadas8bit (0 may improve performance).

loadas8bit: set to 1 to force 8-bit (lower quality) sounds (see hisound also).

mp_decals: set max number of decals to display in multiplayer (set lower for perfomance boost, but blast marks and logos will disappear sooner).

precache: 1 = enable pre-loading of all needed files at map start.

r_drawviewmodel: 1 = enable drawing player weapon model (0 improves perfomance a bit).

r_dynamic: 1 = enable dynamic lighting -- the light reflections glowing objects make on other objects nearby, such as rockets and the flashlight (0 may improve fps). Note: Doesn't work for DoD 1.0!

r_mirroralpha: 1 = enable reflective textures (0 may improve performance).

r_mmx: 1 = force MMX calculation methods for MMX CPU's (set to 1 if your CPU supports MMX! Any p2 does, as do most newer AMD and Cyrix chips. If using 1 reduces perfomance, set back to 0).

violence_ablood: 1 = enable blood (0 will improve perfomance some, but you won't see any blood).

violence_agibs: 1 = enable gibs (0 will improve performance some, but you won't see body chunks).

violence_hblood: 1 = enable more blood (0 will improve perfomance some, but you won't see as much blood.

violence_hgibs: 1 = enable more gibs (0 will improve performance some, but you won't see as many body chunks).

_ah: 1 = enable the help dog and 0 = disable it ...

cl_minimap: enable (1) or disable it (0) ... you need to disable it if you want fog.

cl_fog: 1 = enable fog, huge FPS boost. 2 = the same, the fog is just brighter and minimap works with it too.

cl_particlefx: 0-3, the smaller the less detailed particles are. I don't know if 0 works ...

cl_easymode: 0 = Should turn off all the newbie stuff.

cl_identicon 0 = Removes the overhead team icons.

cl_weatherdis: sets the distance you can see particles from. lower = faster.

cl_bulletejects: If you set this to 0, the gun won't spit out empty shells when you shoot. FPS boost when shooting.

~ Outside DoD Tweaks and Fixes

Texture Clamp Behaviour (FPS Fix): If you have 4x.xx Detonator drivers, go to Screen Properties, Settings, Advanced, *insert video card here*, OpenGL Settings, and uncheck "Enable conformant OpenGL texture clamp behaviour". Helped me. Thanks Pvt.Joker.

Minimap (FPS Fix): If you have VERY low fps when the minimap is on, just turn it off. It's a bug that we can't do anything about. Note: Someone (erm Jubis_66) fixed this by updating his Detonator drivers ...

Installer (Install Fix): If the DoD installer doesn't work, download a new one! If that one doesnt work either, download another!

Missing Maps (Install Fix): Get the missing maps from here.

Fog doesn't work if minimap is on: Use cl_fog 2 instead of 1. The fog is brighter and you can use minimap at the same time.

FPS wont go over 60 (FPS Fix): Okay, here is how to fix it. Type fps_max 100 to your console. If it didn't work, go turn vsync off from you videocard properties OR get a Refreshrate Fix (just google it).

How to Change/Find your CD Key in case you lost it or need to change it.

If you installed dod and or Half-Life but lost the key you can look it up by going into the registry. NOTE-this is for advanced users, you should not attelp this unless you know what your doing and understand the risk. i nor the DoD Boards or its affiliates are responsible for any damage you do to your sytem.

anyways, if you lost the key and need it:

open the start menu>run>type regedit>hit enter

For DoD Retail
In the registry go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\Settings then delete only the key labeled yeK1.

Activision Support Cd key stuff https://activision.custhelp.com/cgi...&p_sort_by=dflt

For DoD Mod

go HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\Settings

Just to make sure we're on the right track, the bottom right of the window in the staus bar should read:
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-Life\Settings

Now look over into the right frame and find the one labeled "Key". Double click on it and that value data is your CD key!

If you lost the key you can find it here or if you installed your cd onto two Pc's delete the key form one of them. no Half-Life game will work if it is installed on two computers using the same CD Key.
