The answer is 4 and 5

A natural number is a number that is a whole, non negative number. Since they have to be consecutive, we have to use one number and the number that foloows directly after it.

Knowing this, any combination of numbers we pick will end up with the difference 1/1

1/5 - 1/4 = 1/1
1/22 - 1/21 = 1/1
1/1000 - 1/999 = 1/1

Ex. We pick X and Y, 2 consecutive natural numbers. The reciprocals of these variables are 1/x and 1/y. Because we have to pick numbers that go in consecutive order, y is the bigger. So our equation is now 1/y - 1/x = 1/1. We can do this with any 2 consecutive numbers, as I said earlier, but you have to select two that will have a difference of 1/4 of your smaller number. Knowing that our answer will always be 1, we can ask what number does 1 go into 4 times. Obviously, the answer is 4. Because 4 has to be the smaller number, our second number is 5.

And there ya go I actually hate math, even though I'm fairly good at it.

Alright! Homework Helper! Anybody want to write me an essay on the principle of evil as depicted in Goethe's Faust?

x and x+1 are your numbers,

1/(x+1) - 1/x = (1/x)/4

bla bla x = 4

If you want the full answer look here:

given:
abs(1/x-1/y)=1/4*1/x
x+1=y

solution #1: if 1/x-1/y >= 0

1/x-1/y=1/4*1/x
1/x-1/(x+1)=1/(4x)
-1/(x+1)=1/(4x)-1/x
-1/(x+1)=-3/(4x)
1/(x+1)=3/(4x)
3(x+1)=4x
3x+3=4x
x=3
y=4

solution #2: if 1/x-1/y < 0

1/(x+1)-1/x=1/(4x)
1/(x+1)=1/(4x)+1/x
1/(x+1)=5/(4x)
4x=5(x+1)
4x=5x+5
-x=5
x=-5
y=-4

now to check my work
1/3-1/4=1/(4*3) - true
1/-4-1/-5=1/(4*-5) - true

so the answer is (x,y) = (3,4) and (-5, -4).

I don't read german all that well, so here is a place to start (and I hope you can read the german)

Another place to look for some ideas is here:

But remember teachers are not as stupid as we all hope, so make sure that you only use these are ideas not your paper itself. (Getting caught for plagerism sucks, so I hear)

My German is pretty flaky too, but fortunately we are reading a translation in English class. I feel you about the plaigerism though. It definitely isn't worth even thinking about.
