Sounds one heck of alot like a race condition or something similar, then.
Nothing an end user can do but wait.

How do ya get ASE to work with it. I have it pointed to email/TFC/hl.exe and it still says it cant connect. I'm assuming thats not the right place to point to?

Plus its back to killing my internet connection.

- Steam does NOT work on my computer right now. These errors are mostly not related to any bandwith problems.
- When I try to start Steam, it takes several minutes to load
- When I press the "games" icon, it will sometimes freeze, then windows will stop the program with about 4 error messages.

All bandwith and conectivity caused. I'm telling you the same thing happened after the 2nd public beta was leaked. The second the bandwith issues were gone so were the program error's.

they have enough money to actually pay some server providers to get a rental server, or hire people like amazon. They know it, but they're being cheap tightwads.
- The steam network right now is capable of just under 118 MB/s in transfers
- FilePlanet's 7 public server's have been at 100% usage with 2 hour lines.
They claims to AVERAGE 5.5 Terabytes of data per DAY.
- FileShack's servers are running at 100% with up to 3 hour waits. They
have had the full installer online for a little under 28 hours and have had
11574. Thats about 4 Terabytes of data in a day.
Thats roughly 10 terabye's a day and all 3 networks are maxed. There is no way they could have had enough resourses to pull this off smoothly.

Part of the game you want to play is not installed, or part of another game that your game is dependant on is missing, or poor conectivity is preventing verification of the installed mod from steam. VP hit me on IM I think I might be able to help you along a bit.

Alright, I can understand that it's all bandwith related. I think you misread the second part of my post though. You were saying that they'd be able to clear up bandwith issues when they can actually pay some of the content providers, and also gain more companies, such as amazon. I was saying that they should be able to hire more companies already, without having to start gaining money from HL2 and Steam subscriptions. Of course it still wouldn't all run smoothly, but I think it'd make a lot more people happy knowing that Valve actually tried to make things as smooth as possible. Three content providers simply isn't enough for how many people are going to be downloading Steam. Also, File Planet's public servers are always 100% busy with at least 1 hour wait lines

BTW, I was answering Blown's question about the game not being available when already installed. I've had mine working for awhile now.

but some ppl say they have it working with TS. And I see them in game playing on steam servers. :/

edit:: NM, I got TS to work thru ASE. So more than likely I can get it to work anyway needed. Still cant get it to work thru Steam client itself though.

As long as you dont select Clean Up Files you can play regular HL and mod's until won goes down

Downloaded steam, at last. Didn't quite work right so I checked add/remove programs and it has an option which is "repair program".

I did this and it repaired all sorts of things and now works at least with TFC. Just waiting to get into a DOD game and see if it works as well.

Q: why would it repair something that I JUST downloaded

I had to change all my stuff over in the ingame options menu. If you double click on the game name you want to edit, you'll see an option button, just clicky there, and you'll see everything you want to change, presto chango, easy peasy lemon squeezy! It's about the only thing that was easy for me to do on this little goat rope!

Ok, for whatever reason I had to move all my files from my old HL install to the Steam install. Steam is dumb and doesnt move the files over so you have no maps or sounds etc etc.

So, go to your current HL install and select copy of the TFC or whatever mod folder.

Now go to email/TFC or whatever mod you just installed and paste it into that folder.

So now it should be email/team fortress/TFC folder. Now you dont have to dl maps every single time you join a server.

Another thing I noticed is when a map changes, and you have to download a map, it locks up your system pretty good. If you ctrl atl del it takes forever for that to pop up. I guess patience with this program is needed from anything. Moving the files helped a ton for me.

Custom mods need to be moved to the email/Half Life folder BTW since even though I told it I wanted MS/TS/BC installed it didnt do any of them.

All I can gather is I did a custom install on HL and its too stupid to look for it, and doesnt ask where to find the files. Does anyone have it in the default location and it moved the map files over?

Q: Even in single-player mode I get awful framerates compared to my
CD install. (15 FPS instead of 60-80). This is using the same video options as my CD install (OpenGL 800x600 16bit windowed).

Anyone know anything about this?

did you go into options under steam in the console and set up your video settings? I get about the same frame rates.
