Owning Guns?

Well, I would expect JD to be posting, but I am looking into purchasing a gun and was curious where other people stood. Also, maybe some recomendations will be posted from people that have experience with it.

I'm looking more towards 9mm pistols from H&K, S&W, Glock, or Berretta. Thoughts or suggestions would be nice.

I picked Recreation / Hunting, my grandfather owns a gun shop and has all sorts of guns. Mostly we just target shoot for fun since he has a lot of woods, we just shoot them in the woods. Just remember play it safe guns arn't toys.

I think JD would be the authority here, but you might also check these out. These guns were recommended to me for home security and comfortable for concealment if you plan on carrying it. If I were you when you go to the training class that you go ahead and get license to carry the weapon even if you don't plan out it, because you never know.

These are cheaper than the ones you are looking into. So if you are going to get a Glock or H&K then you might want to look at pawn shops to get a good deal on it. But it depends on how much you are looking to spend.

P.S. Hamese here in DFW there is a gun range that will let you shoot up to 35 different guns for a small fee, so you can figure out what you feel comfortable with. I would imagine Houston would have something similiar. I would try that first before you make a purchase.

I own several firearms and they are all for recreational activites. Hunting, target shooting and organized competitions are what I use them for. Mind you if SHTF I guess they could be used for personal defense too but hopefully we wont ever get to that point.

I guess Ham the question is what do you wish to use it for?

If its target shooting then generally I suggest people get a .22 first as its a easy gun to shoot, allows you to develop your accuracy skills and its very inexpensive to shoot. After that then you can move up to a 9mm or anything else that you wish to own.

The 9mm I own is a Glock, I am quite fond of it. Its accurate, fast and easy to shoot. You dont have to do any modifications to it to get shooting and there are lots of accessories and dodads available for it if that floats your boat. The firearm is safe yet doesnt have extra safeties to deal with when shooting, as long as your finger is off the trigger it wont go boom. Once your finger is on the trigger then your ready to shoot so you should never have your finger on the trigger (or in the trigger housing) until your ready to shoot your target.

I also prefer the trigger which is a variation of a single action trigger over the double action triggers of say a Beretta or any of the others like it. Again, most of those guns also have a safety to work with and that can be annoying if you ever get into competition shooting of some sort. Also, shooting competitions are both fun and a good way to develop better shooting skills so I recommend everyone to try it out.

I dont know where your located Hamese but I would suspect that any of the indoor ranges and gun stores offer "introduction to firearms" courses where you get some basic skills introduced to you and get to try several guns. Chances are they also have shop guns that you can rent and try before you buy. If not then try to find some friends with the guns your considering and try them out before you spend your money on something that you may not like.

Yes, guns are not toys, a very good thing to remember.
That being said, I recently purchased a benelli nova single barrel, pump action shotgun, pretty nice and reasonably priced. Shooting skeet is what I've used it for, although home defense can't be overlooked. I've also purchased a Kimber 1911 .45 compact. A little pricey, but the match trigger and other niceties they've included make it a joy to shoot.

As far as pistols go, I tend to stay away from 9 mm. Depending on what you're using it for, there are a limitations. For instance, if you plan on keeping the pistol for security, a 9 mm doesn't have the stopping power I would want. For some reason having to shoot someone 5 times before they go down doesn't appeal to me. I simply prefer something that will drop someone the first shot. #2gunfire

My little brother just bought himself a Moisin Nagant 1944 (also called an M44). It's the longrifle used by the russian army during WWII (you may have seen it in "Enemy at the Gates"). Very cheap rifle, they run about 99 dollars. That thing is a beast tho!! Damn near took my little brothers shoulder off the first time he shot it, I almost died laughing!!!

Anyways, make sure you try out a few guns before you buy. Most shops have rentals so you can get the feel of the gun you want to get. This may not apply to some of the "specialized" guns (match, gold cup, whatever), but you can get a general idea what you're looking for. You may find out you prefer a .38 to a 9mm, or even a .45. Just remember to find one you are comfortable holding in your hand, as this can affect your acuracy greatly.

Look at the fast replies. Im not really a novice when it comes to firearms, just not a knowledgable as some. I am in the market for safety above anything. My wife and I are planning to get a CHL if purchasing.

There are plenty of ranges around, so finding out if one has a option of testing several different is a good idea.

And the safety features are wanted. Really just a safety switch with the gun stored in a safe or something is what Im looking for. Childern might be in the near future, and I plan on being responsible with it (Thats a whole other subject though).

Well I have 2 of my own that are in my room with lots of ammo(Yay!

) I use them for hunting/blasting anything that moves I guess you could say protection.......But I just generally enjoy blasting away at anything and everything.....I have a Winchester model 70 bolt action 7mm magnum with scope and a Remington 12 gauge 870 express 3&1\2 inch magnum

....I also enjoy playing Legolas with my compound bow

*edit*I just read your post hammy just to ask why torture your children with gunlocks and what not? I mean im allowed to keep the guns in my room with ammo right there.......And I like it that way

About a year ago I was looking into getting a hand gun after my apartment was broke into while myself and my roomate were both home, but alas per Chicago city ordinance, handguns are outlawed within city limits for anyone who isnt specially licensed, such as Police and the likes. So I gave up that idea, as a shotgun or rifle isnt very practical for the place I live in.

Actually a pistol grip shotgun is great for home defense.Throw some buckshot in there and say goodnight Irene

Taurus is the way to go if you like Berrettas they are made to the exact same specs on Berretta machinery in Brazil.We own one and have put 1000+ rounds through it without a single jam.They are easy to clean and operate.I would go with a used one so you can get the 15+1 round capacity.If you want a new gun with the crappy 10+1 round capacity I highly recommend a .40 caliber they don't kick much and have great stopping power.They are the 9mm of the future with more bang and not a whole lot more kick.
