I also heard that the whole thing it being delayed is a hoax. Valve hasn't announced it being delayed.

Their publisher has said it was delayed till the holidays and refused to comment further. When questioned, the president of Valve said "That's the first time I've heard anything about it". For right now, I don't believe that the game has been delayed because of the lack of "real" news about a delay, and the devotion valve had about getting it released on time.
____________________________________________________________
From a post in a different thread:

Actually, HL2 is supposed to be coming on well. There's supposed to be a rumor that they delayed it, but all sites I've checked so far still say it's due for Sept. 30th.
"Vivendi Universal (HL2's publisher) says that Valve is now scheduled to complete the game in time for the holidays.

When Valve announced Half-Life 2 in early May, some were surprised by Valve's firm insistence that the game would be ready to ship on September 30. Today we received word from the game's publisher, Vivendi Universal, that Half-Life 2's release has been delayed until later this year. Without commenting on the delay, a Vivendi Universal representative reaffirmed that the game would ship this year, sometime during the holiday season."

However...

"When Gabe Newell of Valve was asked about the HL2 delay, his response was:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First time I've heard about this
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unless Valve or Gabe make this official, there is no delay of HL2 release. If it's not from Valve or Gabe, it's not official."

BTW, Ultimate Gamer posted cpu requirements for the game
"The minimum system specs are currently targeted at a 700 MHz PC with 128 MB RAM and a DX6-level video card TNT2 etc, meaning you won't need a supercomputer to run Half-Life 2.

But on the machine above don't expect to see reflective water, dynamic shadows and bump-mapped textures. The game running at maximum detail 50/60 fps, machine required for this is approx 1600Mhz cpu, 256 mb ram, GeForce4 Ti card.

In real life you need the best from a new game so I would recommend a 2000 cpu, 512 mb ram, GeForce4 Ti4800 128 ddr or ATI Radeon equivalent.
The more power the better but not essential with this game."

[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:[edit]:

I also read that HL2 has errors with cards using an nvidia chipset, that valve does not plan to fix any time soon. ATI cards are "supposed" to run better with the game.

Sounds like a conspiracy. Maybe ATI bought out valve to induce a hideous revenge on nvidia for "getting in with" some companies (UT2k3 etc.)

My card had good drivers the day I bought it. 9500 Pro. I believe yours was the 8500 correct. Since that series they have been real good with drivers, at least for me.

Nvidia has slightly fell behind, just like with benchmark programs they praise about that show thier cards in good light, then the new cards come out and a new benchmark shows them to be slow and they dismiss it. Then they write drivers specifically to cheat said benchmark and the ppl that developed said benchmark found out and deleted all results ran with cheating drivers taht disabled quite a few effects to render a high score. YAY, go nvidia.

Sorry anyone who thought that I meant an nvidia chipset for motherboards. It's only with Nvidia videocards. That being said, here's some confirmination that HL2 will work better with ATI cards:

"HalfLife 2 is looking like a truly awesome game.... but is that only for ATI card owners? A recent release from Valve states that:

"You are out of luck on NVidia [for anti-aliasing in the game] unless either NVidia or us come up with some clever way of solving this problem."

This could mean that NVidia card owners would suffer from lesser than great graphics while playing the game and leads me to believe that they aren't going to do much about this problem"
