I was at the bar the other night and the discussion turned to marriage. Most of my friends there were my age (26) to 30. And out of the six of us I was the only one looking forward to getting married. Not just to anyone, but to the girl thats out there somewhere that drives ya crazy and you can't live without. Now to understand the story, these guys have absolutely no intentions of settling down anytime soon. They like their freedom of chasing down girls and then moving on to the next one the next weekend. So I asked them the question, If by some act of God at that moment if the girl that was perfect for them in everyway that they would be able to love forever walked in the door would they (1) Take advantage of the opportunity and settle down or (2) Let it slip away and treat her like all the rest. I was suprised to find myself the only one picking #1. I guess I just don't understand that, If its a sure shot why wouldn't you take advantage of it, why gamble and say if theres one then another will come along someday. Now I know this is a impossible situation, because you would never know 100% if she was the one, but thats what makes the question interesting, what if by some magic for questions sake you did know.

So what would you do?

This could be for single girls too, since from what I have seen lately they're starting to act just like the guys, which I guess in this day and age I can understand.

I think it boils down to ego.

In this society, traditionally, it has been a right of passage for a man (boy) to have sex for the first time. Then, promiscuity is not only condoned, but encouraged. It is a sign of manliness to have had multiple women sexually. It makes some men feel desired. And this is what they base their self worth on. It is natural. It is what society dictates.

I could be wrong, though.

I'm only a couple years older than you and I think #1 is most definitely the answer.

Bring out the old dusty soapbox

I'd probably say #1. However the idea of being tied down doesn't suit me. I don't like the vision of having a wife (which of course means no sex , especially after kids), having little Frag running around and throwing toys all over, doing errands cause I have to, driving around in a big minivan, and having no time to yourself. Most of my married friends tell me how lucky I am to not be married and be able to come and go as I please.

The older I get the less desire I ever have to want this. I've also chosen my girlfriends quite poorly. Let's not mention there's not much of a market for a guy that's nearly 30, broke, struggling to find work, doesn't have his own place, and isn't the greatest looking. So honestly I don't bother anymore.

Most women I've known "say they want the guy who's nice, caring, and all that blah blah." They are full of it because most times I've seen them then do the opposite cause a guy is "hot", has a nice ride, or has money. So like, whatever.

If that scenario that Vic mentioned did happen, I'd choose #1. For me the one night/weekend flings have caused more harm than good in the long run. All it's good for is great stories with the guys and great in the very short term. There's too many risks for me and you never know who you really are bringing home that night. You don't know what she has, if she's nuts, or anything else goofy. I think most people that are only interested in getting laid are usually pretty shallow and/or self centered. But I'm a wise old man compared to you teens and college kids. I've been around the block a few times.

/off soapbox

Marriage is a perfect way to ruin a good relationship.

I'm really confused by everyone's irrational enthusiasm to get married. Why would you want to do that? Really ask yourself...is it just because of you're religion, or desire to do what is expected of you and what generations before tirelessly did?

Well you are falling into the age old trap that men make...

They think they have a choice...

Women choose the men. They are the ones that remember the dates, put weight into commitment, Can't understand why running around at 2am is a good idea, Require you to stick around and build a nice home and life together.

She does not actually ask or demand or do anything you would expect from the stereo typical stories. You will just do it and one day realize that what you thought were your ideas and drives were actually her desire to have you around it was her glue that cemented the relationship in times of turmoil.

maybe i'm not the one to comment on this subject (18 and still......well.......lets just say alone. )

i agree with YPAWOM. why you wanna get married???? if you have a great relationship why get married? i won't say, like YPAWOM, that it ruines a good relationship but all it gives you is a piece of paper more to put away somewhere. oohhh and a party. so why?

I'm not planning on getting married. all i want is a girlfriend for a stable relationship and thats all.

How does marriage ruin relationships? If it gets ruined after marriage how was it ever good to begin with?

Vicoden,

I have heard many of my friends through the years say the same thing. But.. usually if they say "I will never get married" because they can't see themselves ever experiencing what you are talking about. You can. You can visualize it, where most people won't understand until it hits them in the face.

It will happen to them eventually. It always does. All the guys I knew in my family and friends that used to say "I'll never get married" or "I don't need a woman" and so on.. are the ones that are now married or really would like to be with someone at this time.

I'm 34, and I'm not far from thinking along the lines mentioned by Frag.

Oh, and here something about marriage:
Mariage is joining the force of two people to solve problems you would never have if you were alone
