Yeah. He should be able to get a copy of them from someone else's install, if he needs them. Particularly if they are just DLL files.

Google them and see if there are removal instructions available. We use the same program and when these pop up we have always (so far) found how and where to root them out. If you just delete them you are leaving the regestry junk and stuff in there.

I dont know about restore...dont use that.

I don't get the purpose of Norton having a Quarantine folder, why would anyone want the virus to still be on the computer?

That's why mine is set to automatically delete the virus

Oh, and btw, does anyone know how to get rid of W32.Spybot.Worm? Everytime it comes back Norton stops it, but it doesn't delete the file where the virus is coming from...and it's really annoying to get a damn Norton popup when ur playing DOD

Two reasons:

1) If you get infected with a new virus, and later on get definitions that allow you to clean your files, you can clean (and recover) the files that are in quarantine and not lose them permanently. While they're quarantined, the system can't access them and they won't infect the rest of your computer.

2) If you get bad virus definitions that cause false positives (doesn't happen often, but I can tell you first hand it does!) then you won't blow away critical system files if they are falsely flagged as infected.

There are generally two kinds of files that viruses transmit these days. A standalone virus/worm file, and the "regular" files on your computer that it infects. For example, say BugBear gets into your computer. There is a bugbear.exe (or something like that) which is not a legitimate program of any sort. It rips through your address book, sent messages, etc. and randomly picks files in your computer and sends them to any email addresses it finds. Then it goes into random .EXE files and alters them with the code that makes BugBear run when you run the EXE (like WORD.EXE for Microsoft Word). Word.exe is a legitimate program which can possibly have the virus cleaned, where bugbear.exe is not and can (and should) be deleted.

It can be really hard these days to tell the difference between legitimate virus programs and critical system files, as many viruses operate under names like "explorer .exe", winlogon.exe, ntservice.exe, lsass.exe, winhelp.exe, all of which are the same or similar to critical Windows files. When in doubt, search an antivirus vendor's web site (like Symantec) to find out what the virus does and what files it transmits as to see if they can safely be deleted. Most viruses have removal instructions so it tells you what to delete and what not to delete.
