press ctrl alt del and see under processes if hl.exe is still there. if it is, select it and end task. This works for me. If it doesn't let me know, I'll give ya some other ways.

Do you have the latest drivers for your video card?

There was a problem with ATI based cards and HL and that was the exact problem.

it's a completly new comp that i just got. so no reinstall/format.

if i hit ctrl+alt+del nothing shows up i still have the black screen.

the comp normally comes with the latest drivers installed from alienware. but i will look if there is a newer driver out.

Danno beat me to it. Doing this will drop you right back to your desktop. You don't have to mess with the menus either.

You mean to tell me you haven't heard the llamas on DOD complain about their halflife freezing and dropping them back to their desktop?? When I execute a command on their client I drop them not only out of game but out of halflife all together. It pays to behave on the servers, tee hee hee.
