Hello ppl,

The moral of this post is: if it works, don't @#%$ with it. Silly little me went and installed DirectX 8.1, and also updated to the latest nVidia Detonator drivers (went from v11.10 (i think) to 23.11). Net result: anything Half-Life based (CS, TFC, etc.) locks my system when launched. All I get is a thin green line across the top of my screen, and the system is locked bigtime (have to use the reset switch).

I definately think its DX 8.1 related, as I get the exact same crash/green line when launching DXDiag, or trying to change my screen saver ! Also, my system has been working JUST FINE for the last 6+ months before I went and did this. If anyone knows how to ditch 8.1 and get 8.0 back, i'd love to know.

Particulars:
Win98SE on an Athlon 1.2ghz, 512mb RAM, ASUS branded GeForce2 GTS 32MB DDR (aka V7700 Deluxe), no overclocking on anything, was working JUST FINE 'till I installed DX 8.1

Any other ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated, so I can play TFC again

Are you sure your DirectX is the problem.
The detonator drivers are proprietary drivers that should be only used if the card manufacture's drirvers are unsatisfactory.
I would think about uninstalling the detonator drivers and installing the manufacture's drivers.

Here is the link for your cards drivers.

Be real careful you have to fully uninstall the old drivers first! If you need any help post. IT can really be a nightmare if you do it incorrectly.

Yea, I agree with roof for doing those things. You are also right about "if it works don't mess with it". I really don't know what to do never had this promblem. So I will not be much help.

I have a program that will remove DX*.*
You take a chance using it tho. If it doesn't work for you then you have to re-install Win98SE.

I personally have used this program several times and it has worked fine for me. But I warning you just in case you decide to try it.

ICQ me if you want it. ICQ# 2749389

If I were you I would try changing Vid Drivers and such before attempting this program.

hallo again,

Ok, lets see if I can fit 4 replies into one post...

1. Am I sure DX 8.1 is the problem ?

A. Thinking about it now, I'm not sure, seeing as how I changed it and vid drivers at the same time...

2. Why are you using the Det. drivers ?

A. ASUS came out with drivers that (basically) had wall-hacking ability built in. PunkBuster picked up on this and called it a cheat... and I'm not a cheater Also, I got about 1000 pts. more in 3DMark 2000 using the Detonators, and also another game I have refuses to run with ASUS drivers... so this qualifies as "unsatisfactory" to me.

3. Be careful taking out the old drivers!

A. http://www.geforcefaq.com. Almost more info about GeForce cards & drivers than you can handle.

4. I have an app that will remove DX...

A. Thanks for offering, but I found a friend that still had the installer for 8.0 on his FTP site. Used that to pave over 8.1. Also downgraded to nVidia Dets. v 12.41, the last verison before the Det. XPs were relased. After doing this, everything is back to normal.

thanks to all who replied...
