Seems to me a lot of threads have been posted in the Tech Corner about what your perferred this or that is. "What hard drive should I get?" "What is a good brand of monitor?" "I need memory." "I want a new video card." &c.
So let us talk about trusted hardware brands. What, if any, brands of computer hardware do you like? What brands have earned your trust for being functional and reliable? Also, tell us if there are any brands you hate and why.
I'll make a bulleted list to kick things off.
For motherboards, I like Tyan
For CPUs, I like AMD
For monitors, I like CTX International
For video cards, I do pretty well with PNY (GeForce 2)
For hard drives, I like Western Digital
For CDRW reader/burners, MicroSolutions is a good brand for external, LiteOn is good for internal.
And last but not least, the my favored TV card is the one and only Happuage!
I hate IBM monitors. I don't think they make them anymore, which is good.
I LOATHE Maxtor hard drives. You wouldn't belive the amount of trouble me and MPI went through with those guys. _________________

My experience with a Gateway laptop was kind of bad with many problems. I know people with Dell which seems better and is what I'm spending $2700 on. Also, Toshiba laptops are bad to with what I see. _________________

I think you are going to find many varied opinions.
I, myself, have not built a machine in years, so I have no clue as to what the predominant brands are.
However, Stevo, I have always had good luck with Gateway. Though Dell tends to put out a good product, too. But even then, NaniteFog would disagree about Dell.
Everyone's preferences are usually built around experiences...and everyone has had different experiences.
I always recommend that you find a good dealer first. If you find one that will work with you, help you with configs, swap parts that are DOA without a lot of hassle, things like that....well that makes the whole process of building a PC that much better. Regardless of what brand parts you put in it. _________________

For me its:
CPU ---> Intel, I actually like it when theres 2x 2.5GHz running in one comp (my friend has his come similar to this one its what Im going to get when I get mine)... I prefere 2x Intel Pentium 4B 533FSB 2.4 Ghz 512K Cache that can be over clocked to 3.0GHz
VC ---> GeForce. I dont truse Radeon some of my friends have had trouble returning things to them in the past.
SC ---> Creative prefereably XGamer
MB ---> Asus or intel since they seem to work decently with their own CPUs.
CD ROM or DVD ROM ---> Sony, gotta love the Japanese when it comes to this stuff.
RAM ---> 512MB of DDR (definatly 2 x if possible )
Case ---> Shuttles are way cool, though it costs more to get the cetain parts that they need... Or the Lian Li PC65USB Black ATX Case is way cool with a light inside and see through pannels on the sides.
HD ---> Maxitor
