5. Server Operators

Thanks to fine folks running servers, there’s always a speedy game to join.

Hundreds of thousands of people wouldn’t be able to play Half-Life if there weren’t tens of thousands of people and organizations independently running game servers.

Administrating a server can be a thankless job. Server ops don’t get financially compensated for sacrificing the hardware and chunk of bandwidth necessary for running a decent server, and ungrateful, whiny, or just plain malicious players can sometimes drive admins nutty.

But thanks to their efforts, there is currently no shortage of low-ping places to play. Hooray.

WOOOOOT

Since it was so long ago, a lot of people have forgotten how much fun plain old Half-Life deathmatch was (and still is!).

HLDM is my fondest memory of online deathmatch. I liked it soo much.
