As to the popular notion of thumbs up or down, there is, in fact, no indication how the approval of the crowd was signified. Pollice verso translates simply as "turned thumb," but the manner or direction is not known.

Several other expressions in the classical literature, however, do offer means for conjecture: pollicem vertere, in which the thumb was extended and directed toward the heart to indicate that the gladiator was to be dispatched; pollicem premere, in which the thumb and forefinger were pressed together, and pollice compresso, in which the thumb was folded in the fist, both of which indicate approval. Here it seems that the exposed thumb mimics the sword, which either is to be used or hidden away.

The first usage can be seen in a passage from the Christian poet Prudentius, who rails against the carnage in the arena.

"There she [the Vestal Virgin] sits conspicuous with the awe-inspiring trappings of her head-bands and enjoys what the trainers have produced. What a soft, gentle heart! She rises at the blows, and every time a victor stabs his victim's throat she calls him her pet; the modest virgin with a turn of her thumb bids him pierce the breast of his fallen foe..."
