Ok I know about ad-aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/.
I just heard about another one spybot http://spybot.eon.net.au/
We use ad-aware at work and we had to call in a technician for something and he d/l spybot. We ran ad-aware and cleaned etc. After we ran spybot and it found more suspicious files.
Can anyone give me further info on it, is it safe etc _________________

Add. info. When technician ran ad-aware it found 20 some files. After he ran spybot and it found an additional 301 files. This was a few days ago and so far nothing has happened as far as negative to work system. Spybot apparantly has been out about the same time as ad-aware but from what we were told it pays to scan with BOTH. _________________

As you can see from the site, Ad-aware hasn't had its sig-file updated since September 24, so I don't use it anymore.
Spybot is good, as it explains some of the files it detects, such as the MarketScore crap I had on my machine from before I knew better.
It also warns you of many other files on your hard disk, such as browser history, and recent file lists - good for teenagers looking at pr0n sites using their dad's machines, but the important thing is the spyware it detects and removes at your request. |

Ok I d/l'd Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ and yes its free, and ran a scan and it found 156 files. I did nothing to these files and closed program and ran ad-aware. Ad-aware found 7 files which I cleaned up. Reran spybot and it found 150 files. Checked all the little boxes and fixed all these.
For those of you that already use this, spybot just updated there files so you may want to check into it _________________

Spybot looks for recently used item lists too, so that is one reason why it finds alot. _________________

Spybot is good, as has been mentioned earlier Ad-Aware had not been updated lately. Thats changed, there was a update for Ad-Aware released yesterday or the day before I believe.
I run Ad-Aware and another program called Pest Patrol, between the two I am pretty sure all has been caught.

I"m not the type to just surf the web, so I have a question. What kind of files do these programs look for? Is it just ads that auto-download to your comp or something else? |
