Here I will tell you the story of the Hemoglobin-S allele, which is a spectacular exemple of evolution in population.

The Hemoglobin gene when expressed is important for the transport of oxygen. A single mutation in that gene produces the Hemoglobin-S gene. Simply put, the human genome has 2 copies of the same gene, one from the mother, one from the father. So, people having 2 copies of the Hemoglobin-S gene suffers from sickle cells anemia, and are not going to live long. I will spare you the molecular details explaining why. People having only one Hemoglobin-S gene does not suffer from that disease, because they have the other healthy gene.

Now, the proportion of African people having one copy of the hemoglobin-S gene is very high, which is anormal since it is lethal if an individual gets it from both parents. However, the reason why this happens is because this mutation protects from malaria! Indeed, malaria is eating the Hemoglobin gene product better than the product of Hemoglobin-S, and moreover, malaria infecting cells producing heamoglobin-S are eliminated quicker. Thus, children having one Hemoglobin-S gene are more likely to survive to the age of five, and have more chances to survive and have children than people carying two healthy copies.

Hemoglobin-S mutation is thus prevalent in all regions where malaria is endemic.

Actually Paddy, what you're describing is not evolution, but rather natural selection (not the mod!) In this case, the Hemoglobin-S gene makes the species more fit to survive in a hostile environment, and those without it die off. Evolution is the process of mutation over tens or hundreds of millenia, where natural selection can take less than one to take effect.

i was wondering where paddy was going with that post

but anyways the only reason i brought this up is because in one of my classes we have a discussion on a topic the teacher picks and it was on racism. i was just trying to figure out why ppl think they are superior to another race when in fact we are all the same species i mean we all have our str and weakness and it is best suited for our environment. but back to the many question i finally came up with is why is tehre racism i know why ppl say they hate a race or why they think they are better but i just want to know why human beings think they are better than another race. does evolution cause this to try to diminish the population of humans on the earth down to a number that would suit the planet better. is it part of a gene that makes us warlike? i mean i have many more theories but i am starting to get sleepy cause its 230 am so if i get up and have time ill write down some more. night all and thanks

peace and good night

It is not that I think that I am superior to anyone else (powder and jfet know I am not), it is just that I need someone to pick on ... and it is not always easy to pick out the sober people. So it is alot easier to find someone who is different for color of skin, location on the world, or religion. I think that the only way that the earth will unite is through some outside threat.

1st of all shock have u read enders game if not go read it

2nd of all shock we all know ur not superior ...well...that is if u dont camp and use a sniper rifle u arent superior

3rd i wasnt just saying that racism isnt the only reason i was just using it as an example and at that point of the discussion with my class we were discussing it so i felt that, that would be the topic i know that there is racism, prejudice, and etc.....

3rd another thing that might eradicate those types of problems if not for an outside threat would be if everyone got to know ppl online. yes i can already imagine problems with this so dont bother pointing them out. but i mean i dont know what anyone looks like and that limits harassment besides a select few that get made fun of when i pwn them in game there is no racism on the nets. i am not a racism and dont plan on ever becoming one of them but i can see the other point of view because my english teacher has drilled into my head enough times to look at the other point of view or play the "devils advocate" but all in all i must say this to ppl who think they are superior and i will quote homer simpson.

"No matter how good you are at something there will always be someone better than you. You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try'."

i think thats the quote if not its the one im using so

night all

In fact, that is not entirely true. There is also some kind of racism on the net, usually regarding language. I've seen a lot of people being called a moron simply because they were asking a question in french on a english board (but where french-speaking people were known to post), and they didn't know how to say it in english.

Even on the Ville Server I observed things like that. Indeed, there is some kind of a french connection, all the [DOXA] members are from Quebec (french canadians), and sometimes I have fun speaking to them in french. These guys communicate a lot together, however 90% of the time in french, and recently I've seen some guys asking "what are these fools saying....?" or "in what stupid language are they speaking?".

That is something that often infuriate me, as 1) there are no rules against speaking another language on the server 2) you can mute them easily if it bothers you (go to console, list of players, then choose "mute", and 3) well these guys can communicate in 2 languages, which is better than the guy saying that kind of comment.

But you see? There IS racism on the internet.

I dont think that would be racism if they are the same race, just speaking different languages. I think it would be more like a inconsiderate person type of situation.
Which would fall under rule one here at the Ville.

In english speaking Canuckistan that would be Blue and I,

So the phrase should read:

I have to tell these kids everything, well almost everything

Hmmm... You Canucks speak a funny English. In the sentence "When it comes to me and Blue," 'me' is the object not the subject. Would you say "when it comes to I"? I think not. In textbook English, it comes to 'me', not 'I'.

Bah, why am I wasting my time anyway? You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

And you can imagine the reactions if they were speaking Arabic. It is Ramadan right now (a month in the Islamic calander during which all Moslems fast), and during Ramadan Moslems decorate their property with christmas lights. I have a lot of Moslem friends, and I was talking to one the other day about visitors to the Mosque. She said that they loved to have visitors since it meant that there was one fewer person who didn't think they were gun toting fundamentalists. This shocked me since I hadn't really thought about how much people associate all Moslems with Osama bin Laden. My school is a small private school with a very diverse religious representation, and everyone respects each other regardless of religion. However, in the area around me there must be lots of people who drive by the Mosque with a tinge of fear. This makes me sick since it is pure ignorance that would make someone fear any of my Moslem friends simply because of their religious faith.

I saw a show on cable about the radical fundamentalists. They say they are in the minority and not to confuse them witht the main stream but the suicide bombers are treated like hereos with public signs and such. It would seem to me that most may not believe in what they do but like it was here when the whites as a group turned a blind eye to repression of the blacks, they by their quietness give support to them.

I only have what is told me to judge this, but that is what I see.

im not disagreeing with u guys on the 2nd language thing but dont u also think that it is inconsiderate that someone to be speaking another language i mean when it happens to me i think they are trying to start something or making fun of me or etc....(but that just cause im a paranoid phreak) but do u guys get my point other than the paranoid part, it may not be against the rules to do it but it is inconsiderate of someone to speak another language also so i guess what im saying is its inconsiderate on both parts.

Sure it is. But just like countries, its more polite to speak english on an english server. Would you like to have a person speak japanese to your face? They could be cussing at you, giving you a compliment, or yelling that godzilla is behind you.

What about if these guys actually CAN'T speak english....? Will they stay silent while playing together, just because it happens that this PUBLIC server is frequented by a majority of english speakers? Moreover, since you can actually MUTE them if they annoy you, I really don't see any problems with them speaking french.

I do not represent a majority in Québec, who can express themselves relatively well in english. And even me, i have a lot of troubles finding the corect thing to say in the heat of the action.

I assumed they could, because in your other post you said they could speak 2 languages.

I suppose that if you know you're not the only person on the server that speaks a foreign language, you should go ahead and talk. But if you can't understand other people and they can't understand you, then there really isn't much of a point in talking.

I think I mentioned somewhere they were playing together... so I guess they are speaking to someone, isn't it.
