I'd decide what to get for a connection based on what part of town you live in... I had a cable modem last year in a house in a neighborhood where I know there were very few computer users, especially downloaders... it freakin' flew!

I also know people who live near the college with all the pr0n downloading college kids, and their cable can't compare to a simple 256k DSL... Maybe you could ask the cable company how many people are currently in your area...

1) I don't know if that violates the privacy act .. but its worth a shot

2) if you ask that they'll probably figure you know what your doing and lie to you

3) if you do get slow speeds on cable .. get a DSL line definitly

4) yoda kicks... oh wait wrong thread

If I do replace my dialup the thing that i would get would either be Verizon DSL or Time Warner RoadRunner (Cable), but i dont know which one. I know Roadrunner is cheaper but i dont know which is better in my area. I live really close to the time warner company if that helps any.

Borg...I'm not trying to be an ass but get a part time job at Micky-D's or somewhere...work only 2-3 days a week...one weeks take home pays for DSL or Cable for the Month...the other 3 weeks take home save up and buy computer with a NEAR top of the line video card this fall...you should be able to find a bank that offers free student checking so open a checking account...

this should take the parents out of the problem and also show them how responsible you are...

this winter take life guard training class and work next summer at the pool...

My problem is if I was to have a job, I would have no time to enjoy the benifits. I am also acedemically involved and have virtually no time for a job. I have been trying to find little ways to get doing stuff, but so far, my schedule won't allow me to get a job, even in the summer.

I don't know if your parents pay for a second line for the puter.. but that probably runs what 25 bucks alone then 20 bucks for the Internet connection on dial-up hmm lets see that's what 45 dollars...

and with broadband you only need 1 line... so what's the big deal?

of course if they don't pay for a second line.. just frag me next time ya see me >

That is the reason I got broadband!! I was paying $18 a month for second line, $25 a month for ISP. I pay $50 for cable and I'm done (and extremely faster than dialup). I am only paying $7 more a month for broadband. It only makes sense.

Here we only have the one line. No one ever calls though. If I had the time I would get a job anywhere. But the problem is my schedule won't allow me to get a job. Otherwise, I would have one and would buy a TOP of the line computer. Nothing similar to the thing I have pieced together over the past year from what I am able to get for money.

That is the exact reason why they won't get dsl or cable. I also would want to pipe it to two computers and that would cost more.

That's what network address translation is for. I have four computers on one cable modem.

I prefer DSL. Why?--It is the only broadband available in my town of under 3000 people.

I really like the speed and I have never had any problems with my connection--even in a complete power blackout. (My computer, monitor, and DSL modem all are on UPS--the phone line has its own power source.) I have friends in other cities that have cable (so does my brother) and some of them loose their connection when there are power outages around town--even if their house still has power.

Of course, surfing the web when the power is off probably isn't a big issue for most people.

I use cable ($40/month) because DSL is pretty "spendy" here($70-$100/month)for 256k.
It costs and extra $5 a month for each extra user, or you can spend ~$150 for a router and bypass that charge.
I ping sub 50 to TV IV and ~100 to the other Ville servers.
I can run 2 comps on the same server with no degradation in my/our ping.
IMO it all breaks down to this: If you want your bandwidth guaranteed, get DSL. If you don't really care, or are a cheapskate like me, get cable.

Is that price for cable with or without buying your modem? I heard that prices are cheaper if you buy a modem.
