Assassin-
I had some weirdness when trying different OpenGL settings too. But Valve recommends one particular setting as the most stable for HalfLife. I think its 800 by 600. Set OpenGl to that and see if it still kicks you out. I tried mine on a 1072 by 768 (I think)with my old card and it couldn't handle it, but other settings were stable.
SilverOne is right though, I see huge performance degradation when I use software mode. Especially if the machine processor speed is not super fast to begin with.
Good luck,
Keep in mind the graphics of the game are never too super great, because it was written a couple of years ago. I have a new GeForce 3 Ti500 and it looks practically the same as a GeForce2.

Also, it might be just me being weird, but I always do my updates in the order of importance. So, windows first. Then after windows is udpated and set, I shut off the machine and make sure I can boot up cleanly. Then and only then do I update another item like a graphics driver or sound card driver. Only one at a time, in case they screw up an important registry setting or something. If you have Windows ME, you might also want to set a Restore point before installing each driver, so you can go back if things don't work.
It's a little paranoid, but there is no feeling like getting the blue screen of death after installing a driver and thinking it went fine.

Goldom,
I only know how to do it with Windows ME, but even if you don't have ME, I've heard of some stand alone software that does the same thing. Check Cnet for it. It essentially allows you to take a snapshot of your current registry settings and file structures too, I think. Then if you want to, you can reset your machine to that snapshot at a later time. It's a little dangerous because it will blow away any new files you have created since the snapshot. That's why I like to make sure everything is stable and good and I can boot cleanly before I even set a Restore point.
