What kind of porch are we talking about, here? I have a small concrete one that my wife has put a couple of topiary trees on. Something like that?

j/k. Good post, species.

Didn't Danno already post a link that explained that 56kers do not lag servers?

If I remember correctly, someone on a 56k, with 15-20 fps is in fact asking the server for LESS information than someone on cable. I believe that the TV servers have a max upload/download bandwith of something like 7 kbps per person, and it's not like a 56k can hit those kinds of speeds. If I remember the article that Danno posted correctly, it stated that someone on a cable/dsl connection with 100+ fps is stressing the server way more than someone on 56k with 20 fps, because the cable connection has a higher download speed and it's asking the server for more frames.

Anyways let's wait for Danno to clear this all up

Thewz is right, he has it explained just like i had posted it a long time ago, although i cant find the post.

There are plugins to kick High Pingers, but There are also plugins to kick the Low pingers to. I cant tell you how many times i have been asked to kick people that are pinging pretty high on the servers. PEOPLE WITH A HIGH PING DO NOT LAG OUT A SERVER! As long as you have your rates set up right on the server it wont matter how many LP's or HP's you have on the server. You shouldnt notice any change unless the server itselft is having problems.

Think of it this way: Server has a t1 150,000 bps

Cable Users come in with a rate of 9999
Dial up comes in with a rate of 3000

Now you get about 15 cable users on the server and server will start lagging, Where you get 15 dial up users you still have plenty of leadway.

Basiaclly if server was set a max 22 players and all cable users got on, server would lag out pretty damn bad, cause its got no bandwidth to spare, but if the same amount of Dial Up users got on server would be fine, and have plenty of spare bandwidth

But since You have some smart server ops we have that Max Rate capped(6700 om tv1) so those LPB's do not lag out the server when they all get on..

Understood? Or have i confused everyone?

I never have and never will kick anyone with a high ping, Hell I only used to have Dial up and i would have been really pissed if i got kicked simply for that.

Actually, I just read a whole lot about this. The article didn't right ot say anything, since it wasn't simply about 56'kers lagging a server, but it did imply a lot. From my general understanding, 56'kers don't lag a normal server, unless the server has some configuration problems. So just ignore my other post saying that they do

Actually, cable/dsl users don't stress the servers. Servers do have a maximum bandwith. If 56'kers are simply running along in a deserted area of a map, they should have no latency problems (unless their ping is simply outrageous). But once they reach a battle area, the server will want to send them more data. If the client can't recieve as much data as the server wants to send it, some of the information will simply disappear and not be sent.

Cable and dsl users on the other hand, can normally recieve everything the server wants to send to them, and send out the maximum bandwith the server allows. If the client CAN and is asking to recieve more data than the server can give at one time or if the server wants to send more to the client than the client can handle, the server will cut off data, and will reduce the updates sent to the client. Or in other words, the client will lag, because the server won't send more than it's limit. This doesn't stress the server, it'll just keep the client at the most frequent updates the server can manage. If the server is set to allow more than it can handle, then the server will become stressed, and by my guess, possibly lag out.

However if the client is sending too much data to the server, the client will reduce updates with the server, creating the same effect as above.

"Imagine the server only tells the client once every five seconds what has happened. The client would see players jerking huge distances, would entirely miss grenades going off, and would often die without seeing his opponent, because his world only updates once every five seconds.

Now imagine the update rate is one per second; a big improvement, our player no longer misses grenades going off and sees players moving in a reasonably continous (if jerky) motion; but still at one update per second, he still finds aiming very difficult.

Now imagine the update rate is twenty-five times a second. Suddenly, our player is in business. His client is updated so often that the illusion of uniform movement is achieved.

However, there is a conflict here. The more often the server updates the client, the more data per second the server has to send to the client. If too much data is generated, more than the communication link between the client and server can support, then the server has to begin dropping data.

When this happens, the server simply temporarily reduces the frequency of updates. The client's view of the world degrades, but remains functional.

If, alternatively, it is the client who is sending too much data to the server, then the client reduces the frequency of updates to the server.

Importantly, the more action is going on around a player, the more data has to be sent per update. So 35 updates per second might well work fine in a deserted section of map, but will fail badly in combat."

Correct me if I'm wrong please. It was a confusing article, even though I've read it many times over, and this is just my general understanding.

No, you explained it nicely l337. What I am thinking about now is, What Rate should a cable user have his/her set to. I think mine is at 5000

A good rate for cable users is 7500. Or if you want to find out what your cable is capable of, you can visit my thread at http://www.theville.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12596
