I stop popups by being selective which scripts I let execute. Yes that means the semi-annoying "Do you want to allow scripts to run--yes/no" option appearing frequently--but I just live with it. I haven't found a popup blocker that I like and some of the newer popups are intentionally scripted to bypass the popup blocker. (If I want to use my DSL email account through the web browser--the login script has an embedded popup. )
The thing that irritates me about the banner ads--the freaking cookies they try to set. My cookie manager software has currently blocked over 500 cookies this session for ad tracking (doubleclick, advertising, servedby.advertising, target.net--300 alone here, etc.) after about 5 mins worth of Ville browsing. That is ridiculous! Heck when I previewed this, target.net tried to place another cookie 25 times!
The thing that irritates me about the popups (when I accidently click yes to the wrong script ) is that about half of them cannot be closed under my setup without going to the ctrl-alt-del close program dialog--the popup with no freakin' header!
OK enough ranting. Time to go click a banner ad and support The Ville. |
