Tuesday 23 February 1999
Marine sniper GySgt. Carlos Nathaniel Hathcock III
left us this morning at 0630.

" the finest example of a sniper ....
honor, respect, grace, focus and intensity,
the ideal to which all men, whether snipers or not
should aspire "

In the history of great military and
law enforcement snipers, GySgt. Hathcock
clearly rates the greatest of them all

Already in the Marine Corp, and just
before going to Vietnam, GySgt. Hathcock
travelled to Camp Perry in Ohio to enter the
"1000 Yard High Powered Rifle Championship"
When all the scores were in, the last shot fired,
GySgt. Hathcock had won the highly coveted
"Wimbleton Cup"
the most prestigious of shooting awards

GySgt. Calos Hathcock was credited with
93 confirmed kills while serving in Vietnam
Un-Officially, his body count exceeds 300
GySgt. Hathcock made a confirmed shot that
all snipers talk about to this day, a shot that most experts
would say is impossible

At approx. 2500 yards, with a .50 caliber M2 machine gun
and with a Unerti scope mounted on it,
GySgt. Hathcock took out the target with one shot
In simple terms, the distance was 1.42 miles

On one mission, GySgt. Hathcock and his spotter
spent days crawling around in the jungle on the
outskirts of a large NVA encampment, waiting for the
right moment to take a shot at a high ranking NVA General
results ...... confirmed kill

GySgt. Hathcock and his spotter held an entire
full strength NVA Platoon (confirmed) at bay
for well over 24 hours
GySgt. Hathcock and his spotter, armed with an M-14
shot nearly everyone that tried to escape
When darkness fell, they called in illumination flares
to illuminate the target area, trapping those on the run
in open territory, making the running NVA easy targets

" GySgt. Carlos Hathcock "
Being a Marine, he did his job, and he did it well
He NEVER acted out of malice or hate
and NEVER shot un-armed non-combatants

Yes he is dead but it has been a while.
Google his name for more info on him if your interested. If you can get a hold of his book it makes for a good read. Lots of insights into the condition of the armed services and his involvement in bringing back a forgotten diminision of warfare at that time.
His exploits are just incrediable.

After seeing "Black Hawk Down" I was inspired to be a sniper ranger. But my Mom would probably go nuts if I left to die, being that I'm the only and youngest boy. After reading that post it now inspires me to practice more on my sniper skillz. Good stuff Roof.

There is a book about him as well and it is great reading.
The VC actually had a price on his head also with wanted posters etc. This man had several tours in Nam and was burned terribly when the APC he was riding on ran over a VC booby trap made from a 105 arty round. He was blown off the top but still managed to save several men from the burning wreckage. The resulting burns were painfull and disfiguring but he still managed to compete in many shooting matches after that.
His sniping was done with Remmington 700 it think, not won of the high Tech new sniper guns of today. This guy could shoot a Knat off a Flies butt from 1000 yds and not hurt the fly.

Yeah, if memory serves, he used a Remington 700 hunting rifle and some semi-generic scope from a sporting goods store at a US base in Okinawa...

give him one of the .50 cal rifles they use now... look out!

Yes he did Bitter.
Also he jurry rigged the scope for the 50 Cal for his own us. This was you standard everyday 50 Cal Browning Machinegun on a tripod that he used to get head shots out to and beyond 2500 yds.
The book tells a story about him head shotting from the fire base out in a paddy. The guy didn't even hear the sound of the shot cause the 50 cal slug is supersonic.
