Background processes and ram useage

I have a quick question for you guys. What's the number of processes that you've got going on while your computer is running - without any programs open? Also, what's your RAM useage like? I've got 512DDR but I'm using about 300 or so of that for some odd reason...

You should be able to find either of these stats by pressing ctrl+alt+del and seeing the number of background processes under the "Processes" tab (on Win XP).

You should also be able to find the active amount of RAM you're using under the system information program (usually in your systemtools menu).

I will tell ya where alot of the 300 or so is going, and this just for the Windows XP operating system. XP actually takes alot of RAM to run, alot more then previous versions. My advice to you is to get a Gig of RAM asap.

I have a gig and I am currently running 57 processes. I am using less then half of my RAM and only 2% of my processor.

*it also does not hurt to run a spyware/adware/virus scan too*

I suggest using ad-adaware, or microsoft's anti-spyware

Windows XP is a resource hog. I recommend having 1gig of ram if you are running XP because if you have anything else running at the same time it leaves with very little left. From experience I was running 256 in my old computer for about a week and my computer froze up all the time if the program I was tring to run used any ram at all. With 512 I could open the program, but it was sluggish. With 1 gig I have had no issues.

74 processes iwht probably 15 of them being open programs -- 1.5gig ram and using 900+MB ram and 700+MB page file. (dont look at only the PF usage in task manager.....thats page file...not ram. look under PHYSICAL MEMORY...System cache.)

42 processes with 1G of RAM. PF usage is 311 MB and Physical Memory is about half in use. (1047788K total, roughly 630,000K available, and about 590,000K in System Cache).

I thought it was going to be Windoze... I don't think my mom is going to let my upgrade any RAM at all... She's pickey about the stuff. I guess I'll just suffer along. The number of processes you guys have going appears to be about the same as me so I guess it's just really a windows issue...

Atleast I get to have my own computer in a couple of months for school. Maybe these issues will be sorted out then.

You cab get some goos ram for very little $$$ or is that she won't let you open it up

. It takes about 30 seconds to install and I have seen PC3200 for as low as $29.00USD for 512 sticks. Don't know what that is canuctian, but should be around the $30.00-$35.00 range I think.

Yeah I know it's Tigerdirect, but it comes from the manufacture so you don't have to worry about it being PREBUILT by them.

I have 3 systems I have have built through tham and have had new issues as I have bought parts not there machines

. So basically it is like going to your computer store or anywhere else to buy parts for your computer.

Like Simple said it should not be to much to do a little upgrade. You can get so good 512 sticks for under 90 dollars.

Yeah the ram that Rebel recommended is much better ram I use myself. The best thing todo is to look at what your manufacture of yoyr MB recommends as I know in the past there was a issue with some manufacture of AMD and what ram they used. It just depends on what you want to spend or aloud to spend or if you are even aloud to open up the box.

. If you could get some it only takes a few seconds to install and your mom would love you for even though she don't want it done.

. Anyways with the systems now days, OS and all the goodies you have to have alot of ram otherwise there is no use in the upgrade as you will be bogged down by performance. Might also want to check to see if it allows you to use dual channel as that gives a boost as well.
