Ok, so, I am going to be doing this in about a year ( when my sis graduates hs and has saved enough to go )

Has anyone here done it? Any advice/tips/suggestions? Spots to go to definitely?

Why did you go? (did you go for partying/visit historical places/admire the culture/what?) I know why I want to go, but I know my sister wants to go for the opposite reasons as I do - all she wants to do is party, I am hoping that in a year she will have ... matured a little more, and I am going to pay for her to attend a really great art history class with a great teacher (put it this way, I suck at art, never really cared for it much, didn't see why people love it, this lady got me to start reading up on every aspect of art history I could find - again, I am a history major, and love social history, art is a bigger part of it that I didn't know, and all the "interesting" art they don't teach you about in public school, if you want to talk about this with me, pm me, or I will keep babbling).

How much did it cost you approximately? How long did you stay?

Any info you wish to share is greatly appreciated, I am really looking forward to this, and love looking up info

(yes, I know I am strange)

Also, my sister is more into cities-hot spots, ex she wants to go to London. If I never set foot in London, I would be happy, but I am willing to compromise, provided she does too. I have been to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland previously, and my favorite parts were when we just roamed aimlessly around, and discovered interesting little towns. The scenery was breath taking. I love the fjords in Norway, wow. Ok, shushing now I am.

Okay it would take too long to tell all of it, so IM me if you want more.

In the summer of 2002, I graduated college and threw all my crap into storage, then flew over to a grand old continent called Europe.....blah blah blah.... I back packed (hitch hiked and rode the train) around a bit (about two months). England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Cech Republic, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain.

Favorite places were Munich, Prague, Interlocken (Switzerland).

Remember that southern europe gets very hot, especially since hostels hardly ever have air conditioning.

The 2 month train pass (I think around $700) was real nice because I could spend as much or as little time as I wanted anywhere.

If you can, avoid London, it is very expensive there, besides that was my fifth time to that city.

One of my friend is on a travel trip since last june (started first at Athen and work in a pub during the Olympics). Don't even know if she going to come back one day. She has 1 or 2 CD of mine

She has gone too Africa and Asia too, here some pics she send me so far...

I went to Europe and did some travelling around. We hit Germany, France, Monte Carlo (Monocco), and Switzerland. I was really interested in seeing the older villages, towns, and castles. We took the train, bus, and stayed in different hotels and hostels.

I highly recommend going to Paris. Its kind of cheesy and overdone, but the Eiffel Tower is a must, as well as a cruise along the river in Paris, seeing Notre Dame, the opera house, and a tour of the Louvre. If you are in Paris, you absolutely MUST take the train to Monte Carlo. It was the most beautiful place I have ever been. There is a breathtaking landscape, beautiful cathedrals, a cool marine museum, and great casinos!

The boys in Europe are also quite amusing. Fun times

Thanks for giving me a reason to reminence.

I was there for like 3.5 weeks, and it cost me about $3000 Cnd. It was through school and we got some decent group rates.

I lived in Maastricht in The Netherlands for about 6 months while I was going to college there in '97...I took quite a few trips to backpack around.

As for advice......Don't drink the beer at the Marianette theather in Brussels. The recipe for it is like 800 years old or something to that effect..and it tastes like it's 800 years old...lol

If you go during Carnivale, be sure to check out some of the festivities around Maastricht or up in Amsterdam...it's a blast.

By all means hit the big sites as you travel around, but also take some time to hang out in just a little "hole-in-the-wall" type pub where locals go and talk to them. It's amazing how interesting it is to talk to the average joe's of other cultures..and you don't get that in big bars or touristy areas.

Visit Cathedrals if you're into seeing art. A LOT of art in Europe is in the churches scattered about. The architecture of most of them is art in itself, but they also host vast collections of paintings, sculptures, and documents.

ummm.....places....my faves were

Florence in the Spring.....the marketplaces close to the Duomo were fantastic.

I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend Rome while in Italy...it's easy to spend a lot of time there, but it's just as easy to roam (no pun intended) around and hit the highlights in a day or 2.

Barcelona in early Summer....the people are great, the beach is busy and fun.

Amsterdam........anytime....and yeah...Amsterdam...

And basically anything in particular that YOU want to go see...go do it. It's hard telling when you'd get another chance.

Oh...and I really didn't like Lisbon....it's the second worst place I've ever been......Paris being the worst (the people and the nastiness were awful).

Anyway..that's my advice....oh...and despite what you may hear/have heard..........Hostiles are NOT that bad..and for a few bucks a night (sometimes under $10) it's nice to know that you've just paid for a bed.

actually my family is from germany and we (as in relatives I have never met) own a castle. It is being used as a hotel/bed and breakfast type of thing...

the thought of me in amsterdam makes you laugh... hm, I could see why.

but yeah, my sister definitely wants to go there, so we are going. I am not against going anywhere
