The following is highly opinionated.
I've realized that for me the most important decision to consider when building a new system is if you intend to upgrade it, and if so in what order you'll be upgrading.
I definately recommend looking into a very nice motherboard, as Socket 939 processors look like they'll be around for at least another couple of years. Also, I'd consider saving $150 on your video card and using that money to upgrade your motherboard currently, then get an SLI configuration later. Also, your CPU choice is defintately a good, frugal decision, but bumping a step down might allow you to afford faster RAM or a single stick 1GB. (And currently it seems that CPU prices are more volatile than RAM prices, meaning the price drops are likely to make CPU upgrades in a year or so more feasible than RAM upgrades at the same time.) Oh, and this is a faster DVD+/-R(W)(DL) that's known to be pretty quiet, but will run you $12 more.
I've fallen into the same trap of trying to build (on a budget) a system that will impress my friends today, without thinking about what that system will be like in 12 months or how much of it will still be worth keeping around in 18 months. What you decide to do is up to you, but I know I personally will never buy a top-of-the line video card, as the money I save by going one step down will allow me to upgrade to a card that is faster in 12 months. Or, in the case of SLI buying a $200 card today and waiting 6 months for prices on that same model to drop to $150 will let you kick the pants off of a $350 card you buy today. What's the point of a card that can run today's games at 120 fps? Your monitor probably only does 60 or 75 fps, and your eye does somewhere between 30 and 60 fps.
Oh, and your case isn't my cup of tea, but with BTX on the horizon I guess it's hard to justifying spending a ton on a really sweet case, but you might consider something a little bit nicer at least.
Anyway, here's my idea of a system (if NewEgg lets you in). _________________ -EvilGenius V$^PK

There isn't much point in getting a socket 939 board and cpu if you dont get dual channel ram, which means 2 identical sticks. Also, you shouldnt get a AGP card with an nforce 4 board. AGP doesnt work in a pci-express board. |

like clay said, if you get a one gb stick you cant dual channel so unless u get another but that pretty expensive, and even tho crosair is the best brand for ram, kingston is also good. i forgot to look and see if you were getting pci-e, i would definately get a pci-e mobo and a pci-e vid card because if i remember correctly, pci-e cards are cheaper and they will also take over agp in the future. _________________ R.I.P. yuck, memory and case, if you are spending all that money, atleast get hyperx ( 2.0 cas latency ) and a decent case...
get a SATA HD too,
otherwise everything else looks good |

RAM-1GB now means 2GB dual channel when you get the money
VidCard-Yeah, oops. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-214&depa=1
Final prices (including shipping):
Mine: 1502.23
Yours: 1322.38
Difference: 179.85
Faster ram, faster DVD-RW, SATA HD, better case and power supply, arguably MUCH better upgrade potential. _________________ -EvilGenius V$^PK

Socket 939 uses a on die dual channel memory controller. If you only use single channel ram you will rob your system of performance. If it is a price issue, then it is of course understandable. |
