On the side I like to research family history, and was wondering if y'all might like to share a lil bit of what you know about your roots and some interesting facts. I will start out with mine...
Father's Side
My father was born in Berlin, Germany during World War II. My Grandfather fought for the German Army during that time, and my great cousin was a member of the Waffen-SS. My Grandmother was also raised in Germany till she immigrated to Scotland in the mid 40s, then finally America in the early 50s.
Mom's side
Well my Mom's family immgrated from Scotland (yes I would wear a kilt) and Germany during the foundation of the New World. They also fought in the American Revolution. All of my moms family are Southern Americans from North Carolina. My great great Grandfather and many cousins fought and some died in the Civil War for NC and the Confederacy.
Your turn, don't be bashful _________________

I thought my family were all rednecks that evolved from some primordial ooze, but I found a family tree project my parents did in school, and i was kinda shocked to learn a lil bout my fam.
Father's side
After comin over from good ol' Scotland, my great-grandfather moved to the south. There he married a Cherokee woman (so im like 15% Native American) and had 5 kids, all boys. Out of the 5, 4 of them fought in WWII (my grandfather was the exception). 2 of them died in action (one shot down, the other killed at Normandy.) My grandfather moved to Kentucky in the mid 40's, where he married my grandmother, who had lived on a farm there all her life. My father was born in 1943, and married my mom in 1961 and brought her to Michigan.
Mother's side
After coming over from Ireland, her entire family settled in the south. 15 of my distant relatives fought in the Civil War (only 2 for the North). My grandfather was born in the early 20's, my grandmother in 1918. My grandfather and 3 of his brothers also fought in WWII (they all made it back home too; my grandfather was the only one who got any medals, so he rubbed it in ). When he came back, he went back to his family's farm in Tennessee, where he married my grandmother (they had gone to school together, and she wrote him the whole time he was in Europe.)
*whew*
kinda long-winded there, didnt realize i got into my family history so much.
P.S. - u think ur kilt is bad Rebel? at least u dont run around ur house in a loincloth doing rain-dances and shooting stuffed animals with a bow and arrow (stupid Cherokee blood....) |

I don't know much off the top of my head but I'll tell you what I do know...
Father's side
Great grandfather came from Italy.
Mother's side
Ancestors from all over the place (Europe). Ireland, Germany, and others I think.
Well anyway, there's a lot more to it than that, but that's what I came up with. _________________

I would post but we've traced my family back to about 1000 or so... I really don't feel like typing all of those names and places now - but I will later on. |

I honestly don't know too much about my mother's side. Actually, both of my grandpa's died before my parents even met. I just know that both sides of the family migrated from Germany in the late 1800's (would of been Great-grandparents).
I know a little about my father's side.My great-grandparents moved here from Germany and eventually made their way midwest. My grandpa was born in 1901 so he was pretty much the perfect age to miss both World Wars. During the depression, he played pool to earn money since no one had any jobs. Eventually he got a job working for Union Pacific railroad and worked there until he died.
On my mom's side, my grandpa had a heart condition which wouldn't allow him to fight in WW2. He died way before his time at the age of 39. My mom was 12.
Both my grandpa's died in the 60s and I wasn't born until '82 so it was kind of tough growing up not having a grandpa. I'm ashamed to say that I've only recently became interested in my past. Since both sides of the family didn't move to America until the 1870 or so, it might be difficult to trace anything past that. |

hmm, not yet. My summer project is to draw our family tree. Wish I had time now, but I don't with school and all. I know one of our cousins fought in the American Revolution as a general. Pretty spiffy. And one of our grandpa's fought in WWII. And an uncle fought in Vietnam. _________________

On my father's side, both sets of great-grandparents came here from the Ukraine.
On my mother's side.... well, her father came from Poland when he was a child, and my grandma is kind of a mutt. Her father was a fur trader with a French father and Native American mother. Rumor is she was the chief's daughter. They even had a paragraph about my fur trading great-grandpa in this book about Canada's history that we studied in school. I guess he was kind of well off from all that. Great grandmother has some German, Irish, and some native american. _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

If you know early American/Canadian history, and if you don't then I will tell you now, the French in the New World did very, very well with the fur trade. If the rumors hold true, then they better illustrate the in that the French had with the indigenous tribes. For a Native chief to let his daughter marry a white man shows the trust that developed between your G'pa Lhiannan Shee and G'ma Lhiannan Shee's tribe. However, accounts show that Indians were usually in it more for what they could get out of it economically (ie weapons & steel goods) than to form friendships with the white man. But, all in all the French did better then the Spanish and English because they accepted the Indian way of life and in some cases and instances integrated into it. Quite fascinating to say the least. The Fur Trade is one the most remarkable economic networks in the history of man. Sorry for the lecture... but don't I feel now. _________________
